R9 200 Series GPU and the DX10 fixer query

Recommended Posts

Hiya folks,

Have recently come back to FSX and put my trusty sword away for a while.

I got myself a decent system last year (well late 2013) - AMD A10 Quad core and Radeon R9 200 series GPU. All the other usual ingredients.

I would like to use the DX10 preview settings and with that in mind I am really considering buying Steves DX10 fixer. I do have Acceleration installed.

One question is would I still need to set up a profile etc in Radeon Pro, or does the Catalyst Control Center replace it. Or are they different animals altogether.

Next question - with this CPU, and GPU should the DX10 feature be a good improvement graphically and frames per second wise ? Or not worth the hassle.

Any help or advice gratefully recieved.

Thank you.

Terry

I can't answer your AMD/ATi questions but I would without hesitation say that DX10 gives a much improved visual experience to FSX and is something you should definitely try on the proviso that you use Steve's fixer. My initial experience with vanilla DX10 was really frustrating, I could see the obvious improvements to textures etc but this was marred by graphical anomalies and glitches so I went back to DX9 and doubted I would ever try DX10 again. However I stumbled across an online review of Steve's fixer and decided to give it a try, I'm really glad I did as it lives up to it's promises and resolves the issues with DX10 making my simming much more rewarding, there is no way I would go back to DX9 now.

Terry read the pinned post on AMD at the top of the page. I strongly advise that you test AA with an Amd card befor purchase. AMD cards are prone to spikes in DX10 Iif either the FSX water shader is above 2.low or aa is more than 4x.

Amd driver 12.4. Doesn't have this issue but may be too old for your card.

I run a R290 with DX10 and Steve's Fixer and image quality is better in DX10 than in DX9.

The only thing that seems to work in CCC for FSX is supersampling which must be set in global settings.

CCC profiles do not work for FSX or P3D. I find it essential to have SS on for FSX.

Or you can play around with a hundred or so settings in Radeon Pro.

I'm using the latest Omega drivers.

Hi Steve,

What / how do I test it ? I did tick the DX10 preview once but I had flashing and stuff on runways etc.

I do have a profile in CCC setup for FSX and AA is overide aplication settings. AA samples at 4eQ, and AA supersampling.

But I am using FSX without Dx10 preview at the present.

Thank you for replying. I am all ready to purchase the fixer if it has a chance of working :)

Ah never mind Steve ....I just read your reply on a different question about the same thing (DX10)

You said ....

If you can launch a flight and it essentially looks ok then it is ok. (i.e the DX10 Preview option is shown and works, there is no black screen, no crash)

The test is to prevent people who have one of

a) Windows XP so no DX10 and hence no DX10 Preview option
B) Multiple GPUs so FSX doesn't run DX10
c) Incompatible addons that crash DX10

from buying it - at least until they have solved their problem and also so that people with multiple monitors can check for issues.

None of the above applies to me so I shall buy it.

Cheers

Terry

Ok I bought and installed DX10 Fixer.  Everything sure looks good :)

At the moment all I have done is ensure in CCC setup FSX AA is overide application settings. AA samples at 4eQ, and AA supersampling. (As per chapter 6 of the docs)

I have set up the FSX display settings as per chapter 5 of the docs. (Filtering Anisotropic and Anti Aliasing ticked)

Then I went flying. :)

I wonder if you could cast an eye on my FSX.cfg (Below) and tell me if there is anything in it I don't need or should not have.

I have chopped out all the irrelevant stuff like controls, sound, etc just for pasting it in here.

Hi Again Gboz,

When you said "I find it essential to have SS on for FSX" what is SS ? Did you mean Supersampling again ?

Do you not have a Radeon or CCC profile setup at all then for FSX ?

Thanks

Terry

Hi Terry, yes I mean supersampling.

Try this basic setup:

Don't run Radeon Pro.

Delete any FSX profile you have in CCC.

Set the Gaming/3D Application Settings/System Settings in CCC to default

and then just set AA mode to Supersampling and turn off Surface Format Optimization.

Don't change anything else in CCC.

In FSX Settings make sure Anti-Alias is ticked on, Anisotropic filtering selected and

DX10 Preview is ticked.

Set water Low 2.x.

In Steve's Senery Fixer set DX10 Anti Aliasing to 4x and see how things look.

If the trees are shimmering you might have to go right up to 8EQ.

Thanks GBoz,

I shall try that. I copied what you said into notepad and will try it when I rebuild my AMD / Radeon system.

Am just replacing my Motherboard, GPU, and putting in an i7 processor.

So on my FSX computer I am going Intel, Nvidia.

I will be rebuilding the AMD stuff into a new system in a few weeks.

So I shall try it out then.

Thanks so much for the advice.

Terry
