Well I just installed GoFlight's latest drivers/setup 2.25 and Win7 did NOT like it at all ... with errors like "Failed to install" and "Exceed maximum USB devices" ... oh joy ... back to USB hell again.  In fact, if I have a GoFlight module connected my Keyboard/mouse will not work at the Login screen ... I have to wait several seconds for GoFlight devices to initialize before I get my mouse/keyboard functionality.  This sadly is the same issue I had with GoFlight on my old PC and now on the new PC.  Considering my keyboard/mouse is direct to PC plug-in ... why is GoFlight being evaluated first?  My hunch is ... virtualized device.

 

Microsoft have a USB "FixIt" tools that you might want to run ... it removes Upper and Lower filters and corrects a few other things.

 

As far as I can tell Microsoft just don't have a good handle on USB anything.  But, given the variants of UEFI/BIOS a USB device which can be set to be available Pre or Post boot I can see how it might be difficult to implement anything "solid" around USB.  It's a classic example of "Universal" being to "open" and well ... "universal" ... define the universe ... Microsoft can't, so best guess it.  Sorta like HTML ... open to interpretation. :)

So the plot thickens with the USB 3.0 issue ... it seems the Intel device driver is the culprit.

 

When I plug in just one of my USB 2.0 hubs into my USB 3.0 port of the back of my new PC (direct to motherboard) ... I get "You have exceeded the number of supported USB devices on the Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller"

So found this gem of thread over at Intel ... https://communities.intel.com/thread/52417  (this applies to series 8, but it also carries thru to the series 9).

 

Looks like Intel's USB 3.0 driver caps a 96 "end points" ... may seem like a lot, but the USB spec is 255 devices and each USB device can have up to 32 end points ... so plugging in only 3 devices can use up all 96 "end points".   Doesn't look like Intel continued to respond.  I guessing the 96 cap of end points is done so that USB 3.0 is guaranteed to certain level of power to meet the demands of the higher voltage for data transfer speeds.

 

Ugh...

Quick update on the USB 2.0 / 3.0 situation.

 

As I suspected, do NOT plug in a USB 2.0 hub into a USB 3.0 port ... technically they are supposed to be backwards compatible, but it seems they are not and/or the Intel USB 3.0 driver has some limitations and/or bug to address.

 

If I plug my USB 2.0 hubs into the "Few" (only 4) USB 2.0 ports, all my GoFlight gear is recognized and working.

 

Tried using a USB 3.0 hub in a USB 3.0 port with USB 2.0 GoFlight modules, but sadly it only took 4 GoFlight modules before I got the same "exceed number of support USB devices for ...".

 

Thought I'd share this info ... if anyone has got 17 or more GoFlight modules working on USB 3.0 hubs, please do share what hubs you used and if you're using the Intel USB 3.0 drivers.

Update to the update of the update about USB 2.0 / 3.0 and my GoFlight gear ...  :)

 

Using a USB 3.0 Hub in USB 3.0 ports does NOT cause the "exceeded the number of supported USB devices ..." --- so this is good news since the Asus Rampage V Extreme has more USB 3.0 ports than 2.0 ports.  Now I need to go out and buy some USB 3.0 hubs.

I’m curious though; why didn’t you take the Xeon route for this monster, budget/ROI or performance concerns?

Rob, what about a USB 2.0 PCIe card, you have plenty space between the titans for it. It'll have its own onboard USB controller so this might allow for extra USB 2.0 connectivity by bypassing the motherboards Intel controller??

I honestly have found No benefit to OC the Titans, I did a short test with 106% OC and no difference other that it introduced vertical spikes and screen flashing.

 

 

But it makes the system oh so quiet! Not to mention looks real nice.

Sadly, it looks like this is going to be my ONLY choice ... not matter what I do, I cap out at about 14 devices.  I gotta believe this is an Intel driver issue or a rather serious flaw in USB 3.0.

 

Anyone else manage to get more than 14 USB devices working on X99 based systems without have to purchase additional USB controller? 

 

Oh well, off to go buy a USB 2.0 PCIe card.  It's always "something" with a PC.

Quick Update:  Less all my GoFlight gear I did a baseline flight out of KSFO using v2.5 base without hotfix.  Compared to my 3960X old PC I went from an average of 27 to an average of 37 on my 5960X ... I also tested locked at 30 (my normal usage) to kill any chance of stutters and I'm happy to report very smooth (made a quick video and will post later).

Only difference is that I did turn up road traffic to 14% and ships up to 50%.

 

CPU ran very cool ... 33 c, all cores working ... I also did 1100 Kts low and fast test to see how well terrain kept up and fluidity of motion ... all pretty good.

 

Lets see what happens when I load it up with add-ons.  But so far I'm impressed ... I was hoping for 10% gain on baseline, so 27% gain was a surprise.

NICE BCLK OC!  Big benefit there for P3D.  I can't go above 112-114.  Maybe because i/o controller was taken off chip now?  Windows 10 does not seem to have the same USB issues that 8 did.  8.1 is stable that way for me too.  But that new board may be the culprit, and you may need to wait for them to catch up with their drivers.   Asus may be the one's who need time to interpret.  OMG >25% fps improvement?  What do the core loads look like?  I wonder if even heavier on 1 and spread out more out to 7.  That BCLK may help level that out.

Thanks for giving me the first 'puter envy since I put together my current pride and joy.  Approaching a singularity of desire here as well.  But I promised my wife I'd finish my current set of projects before she lets me go from her gravitational domain.

For this type of application I don't think a 8800 series Xeon would perform better.  Although P3D can use more cores, I think there is a point of diminishing returns.  There's also that 1Ghz gap between the OC Xeon and OC 5960X.

 

 

 


What do the core loads look like?

 

Very similar to the 3960X but with 5960X core 0/1 utilization down a little (but with relatively low sample rates monitoring software, it doesn't provide the most accurate picture of load) ... however, time between frames has less variance on average and fewer instances of long frame counts.

 

 

 


That BCLK may help level that out.

 

Higher BCLK and lower CPU ratio worked well for P3D on my 3960X so I figured it would work well for 5960X ... one of the sites that did a video review of the Asus V Extreme had a stable 130 BCLK and CPU vcore only at 1.302v - had the same RAM running at 3150 Mhz (or something close to that) with same timings.

Prepar3D v2.5 BASE (without Hotfix) with no Add-ons, no tweaks (found a couple of bugs during this test flight, not sure if the HotFix listed them ... some buildings and one bridge were showing thru clouds ... layer issue).

This definitely doesnt help my upgrade ich at all..
Really close to ordering 5820K and some watercooling stuff.. :rolleyes:  Im trying to convince that it is good time to upgrade, since you can get about 150€ from 2500k+mobo when sold.

5820K isnt as good as Rob's CPU, but, new hardware is always nice -_-


9900k@5GHz, 32GB@3200 RAM, Strix RTX 2080ti, VKB Gladiator mkii, VKB rudder pedals
