Monstrous Headwinds!

Recommended Posts

I have had a few good tailwind records but tonight flying OMDB-HECA, this was just silly. Less than 400kt groundspeed, in a 777! Madness!

Typical of the Jetsream, and you're actually flying "against it" since your HDG is pretty much Westbound...

You would usually ask for a lower flight level, since higher could be problematic due to performance issues ( if you're still heavy... )

Trust me anywhere from FL280 up to FL400 had nasty winds. I do understand all the reasons behind it but was just posting a topic out of interest.

Due to a lovely PMDG feature called auto cruise, we arrived 15 minutes early! :P  But I don't usually use auto-cruise, but hell I am NOT sitting here all night on a Monday at 376kt groundspeed in a damn 777 lol! B)

Just out of curiosity. Do you guys actually sit for those long hauls like 7-10 hours. I mean do you use auto cruise/time acceleration or some other kind of time compression? I would really like to know. I currently use quantum leap from the avsim library.

If I am on VATSIM I try not to unless pressed for time and in uncontrolled airspace.

Nice! Yes I have a few good tailwinds also but this was my worst headwind.

Oh my, never faced headwinds stronger than 80kts, and even that was too extreme I thought. Imagine 400 headwind, you would be seeing the same scenery below for hours.

Flew from PHL back to JYO early Saturday morning and had a 40 knot headwind at 6500, 4500 and even down at 2000. In a Cessna, that took me from a reasonable 120 knot groundspeed down to 80. I wasn't a fan.

Here in the US we have been stuck with a massive upper-level low pressure trough over the eastern part of the country which has been bringing round after round of snow and arctic cold to the northeast. There is a very high speed jet stream on the west side of the through, with 100 to 150 knot winds out of the west / southwest right along the most direct flight route from the northeast to the west coast.

If you check flight plans right now on FlightAware for airline flights going from places like New York, Boston, Philadelphia etc. to destinations like Los Angeles, Las Vegas, or San Diego, you will see the that they are routing way up to the north - across southern Canada, Minnesota and Montana, before finally turning almost due south to fly across Colorado Utah etc. to reach their west coast destinations.

These northern routes might add an extra 400 miles or more to their travel distance, but it's worth it to the airlines if they can avoid the worst of the 150 knot+ headwinds by going that way!

I usually do. Last weekend I did KJFK-VHHH which was just over 16 hours and I didn't time accel. I just do homework, read, watch a movie with my fiance, the typical long haul entertainment. It reminds me of flying real long hauls so I like pretending to have down time, I find it relaxing to avoid time accel. Plus my virtual airline has a pirep verification system that makes you send pos reports at least once per hour and you only get to log your real time (not the sim time) so if I want my logbook to be accurate I don't accel.

I haven't touched time compression since I recorded the Tutorial #1 Video, so yeah, I usually just let the sim comp do its thing and check on it every once in a while.
