Crashing in tutorial 1

Recommended Posts

I get to the end of tutorial 1 and end up crashing every time on the runway.  My question is can I go back halfway and fly the end of the tutorial instead of starting over every time?  Also will the autoland really land the aircraft?  That is where I am digging holes in the runway.  I have tried 3 times today and have the tutorial pretty well memorized, but ability is not there.  I look forward to some help.  Thank you

Yes. If I remember correctly, the tutorial mentions various save points for you. If you follow these, you'll have save points to return to.

Yes. Ensure you are following the tutorial to the letter. A lot of people skim along thinking they know something. Read things thoroughly.

Gosh, I do not remember any mention of save points.  I have written down every step of tutorial so I could get it faster.  Reading the manual as I am trying to fly and do the functions, really slows me down.  I will look for save points, but don't remember seeing any.  thanks for reply

I thought it did, but I just read it and there's no mention of save points.

The sim does come with a pause key. While this feels odd to me, and isn't too realistic, but if you're planting yourself into runways, I'd recommend slowing down and using the tutorial file directly. My bet is that you're not copying something over when you're writing the steps down.

You can either learn, or you can try to drink from a fire hose. Trying both at the same time isn't going to yield good results. I flew the tutorials yesterday when trying to set everything up for the P3D version of the NGX. That being said, I know for a fact that the tutorial, when you're following it closely, will work just fine.

How about saving flight at about DAGGA waypoint and going back to that point to refly the landing part of the tutorial?  Just wondering.  Thanks

When you say crashing what exactly do you mean by crashing?

The autoland  is taking me into the runway and not flaring for landing.  Will it land itself or do I need to intervene and flare and land myself???Thanks

It will land for you, but I'm assuming you're not following procedure properly if it's actually slamming you into the ground. As I've mentioned earlier, though, the autoland is not (realistically) programmed to be graceful about the landing. A firm landing is more desirable in many conditions.

Lewis,

There is lots of good advice in this thread but probably the best advice is DON'T CRASH!

If you are below about 500 ft AGL on an AUTOLAND approach and you don't see a white FLARE and RETARD armed in the FMA bar in your PFD you've basically got two choices.  Turn off your autopilot and flight director and land by hand or execute a missed approach.  Or, if your feeling stressed out, hit the pause button and go have a beer and think about what caused the problem.

Most important of all! Know what you're doing!  Here are several links to videos produced by Ralph Freshour, a former Boeing and airline instructor, now retired.  These have been produced especially for the PMDG 737 NGX and are free.  The first link is an index to Ralph's videos and after you finish the links posted below then go to the index and study any link beginning with MCP.  When you finish all of these and PRACTICE them you'll be "The Ace of the base";

After you finish these videos return to the index link and see each of the videos whose title begins with MCP.  This will give you an intimate knowledge of how your MCP works and that is vital.

To coin a line from an old movie......."Save points, you don't need no stinkin' save points!"

One of the  most useful addons I own is one called FSiPanel.  This utility will allow you to repeat any approach, of any type, under any wind and weather conditions, anywhere in the world, as many times as you want and when you screw up you can return to any fix or STAR near your intended airport and try again. Short of having a million dollar plus, full motion simulator in your garage, you cant beat it. Here are three links to FSiPanel;

Hooray!!!!!!!!  I finally got all my ducks in a row and did the successful autoland in tutorial 1.  As some members had mentioned, just missing one step in the sequence of the flight.  Makes all the difference in the world.  Will fly it again to make sure it was not a mistake, and then will start on tutorial 2.  Thanks for all of the help, love these forums for learning and help.

Quink......Thanks for the info, I am going to get the FSI Panel.  That is exactly what I have been wanting.  Tired of having to repeat flight after flight to practice the botched landings.  Thanks again
