off. Too much performance penalty. Doesn't look very real anyway.

I run mine at "dense".  Turning down autogen and scenery complexity definitely improves frame rates, but since my flying is generally below 10,000' MSL, I cannot do without scenery.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

Varies, I have six different Saved Scenery Settings, including Dense Urban and Airliner. Autogen varies immensely, from Normal on the Airliner setting to Extremely Dense on my Global Bush Flying setting. Check it out on the first Settings page.

Personal preferences and hardware are the general rules.

Edits to the FSX.cfg file allow for more trees than buildings and vice versa.
