From the photo's it looks as if the embankment did as it was supposed to, kept the aircraft from going over into the river. It is amazing when all safety systems work and people get out safe.

Thank goodness no one was killed. I recall the Midway accident where some weren't so lucky.

Have no doubt this MD-88 aircraft will be scrapped - why is Delta still flying these turkeys?  Don't know for sure, but  they can't be very fuel efficient for one thing...  (of couse, do not think it had any thing to do with the accident - bad weather is bad news for any flying machine).

For one thing, all of Delta's MD aircraft fully paid for, which helps negate the somewhat higher fuel consumption. I fly often, and actually like travelling on a Maddog - if seated in the forward part of the cabin they are one of the quietest and smoothest riding ailiners out there, despite being an older model.

Any landing you can walk away from . . . . . . . . . . . .

stop exporting that rubbish as we are a Fox Free nation

What is wrong with a Fox? Red Foxes are pretty and Silver Foxes are pretty even if both are a bit mangy sometimes. My wife is still a Fox after 44 years ( all descriptions apply ). Except now she is getting delusional and thinking she is a Cougar.  :LMAO:

What Jim said, plus, safe, reliable and you'll find that they are used on shorter, high passenger load routes which also offsets fuel costs.

Apparently it is Delta's strategy to minimize capital expense spending, and they will do all they can to keep older planes running as long as they can to squeeze every last cent of worth out of them, especially if they are fully paid for.   Also look at how they acquired those ex-AirTran 717s to help replace regional jets.

They also fly newer MD-90s, that despite looking like MD-83s/88s, they have glass cockpits and more powerful engines.   But I do know that American was getting complaints from passengers about the MDs, I heard it myself when I went on vacation in California 2 months ago.   One of my aunts also flew on an AA MD-83 like me, and she joked about the decrepit condition of the maddog she flew.   We had a nice laugh over the napkins given out on the flight, touting how AA was introducing a new aircraft every week.

but  they can't be very fuel efficient for one thing..

With the latest huge fuel price drop this argument is even less compelling.

Keeping something flying for longer is actually better for the environment then replacing the fleet. Manufacturing an aircraft has a very large environmental impact so yes taken the age of this fleet, the fact that they are payed for, the cost and resources required to replace all 182 of them, and the resources required to scrap them, they are actually better off remaining in the air.

They do guzzle fuel but the difference is not greater then the environmental impact it takes to replace the 182 planes for which they operate. Remember that is 182 planes that need to be supplied by raw materials, mined from the ground or recycled, turned into supplies and have numerous stages in the manufacturing process and delivered to multiple factories before final assembly, then delivered to the customer......by the time you did all that the environmental impact is much greater then the fuel savings.

Also I agree with A.J. Domingo, pretty awesome aircraft to fly in as a passenger, last time I was on one was with American  B)

We don't have Foxes in New Zealand.....True fact New Zealand's biggest predator is the domestic house cat (they eat native birds).

But yes New Zealand has some pretty good looking Foxes and Cougars that frequent the pubs as well

After flying on these God awful regional jets, an MD-88 is a real treat. I flew to Atlanta from San Antonio in a Delta MD-88 and it was in terrific condition. I could actually stand to stay in the nice wide seat and marveled at the leg room. I'll fly in one any day.

The MD's were great to fly on, unless you're in the back right next to the engines...otherwise the further up front you went, the quieter it got.  I flew in Delta MD-90s a lot on KATL>KDFW flights and they are very quiet in business/first class!

In addition, the MD's are jusssst narrow enough to only fit a 2/3 seat config in coach, so always sit on the left and you'll never have that dreaded middle seat person to deal with.  :P   (I always sat in seat A on the MDs)

Finally, especially on the very long MD-90...when you're all the way up in seat A1 (I actually took A2 so I could have under-seat storage), the feeling of rotation at liftoff is very pronounced and exciting.  If you look at the MD-90 and how far aft the wing/mains are, you can see that the rotational movement at the front is much more than other aircraft it's size...just a little added bonus when flying in that unique model.

With exception of the rare time I had to fly in the back, the MD was a great plane to fly in, and I will be saddened when they leave the skies.  (and its Boeing sister the 717, which I flew on Airtran weekly for a few years, with an occasional 737 thrown in)

The CRJ-200 though...it can have its last revenue flight yesterday as far as I'm concerned...without a doubt the worst regional to fly on!  Even the ATRs and other turboprops I flew on were better than the -200.  I understand that it was never purpose-built as an RJ and was shoe horned into that role...with the -700 and -900's much nicer to fly on (by a long run).

My personal favorite RJ without a doubt is the EMB 170-90 series.  Purpose-built for the role, they designed the fuse cross-section as a "tall oval" vs a circular shape, and you can stand full up in one with no issues if you're over 6ft.  Flew them tons when going the KATL to Houston route when I was consulting.  Plus the 2/2 seating meant you never had a center seat.
