NOAA (XPGFS) plugin v2.0 (rc) released

Today, a new version of the NOAA plugin has been released:

The changelog sounds good:

• Super fast data downloads.
• Own METAR engine.
• IVAO/VATSIM Metar support.
• Performance tweaks: max visibility limit, max cloud height.
• SuperSmoothness™: Interpolation between layers and smooth transitions on updated data.
• and many more including code reorganization and cleanup.

This is the current feature list:

• - Own METAR interpretation engine.
• - 8 Layers of Wind data with 0.5x0.5 degree resolution.
• - 8 Layers of Turbulence data.
• - Selectable METAR source: NOAA, IVAO, VATSIM

My first tests revealed that when using NOAA data, the surface winds re completely out of sync in most airports.

 

I also went ahead and instead of just getting and installing the weather plugin, I chose to fetch the python installer / updater, which ended up installing a lot of stuff I wasn't even aware that existed for X-Plane, but I fear may create some incompatibilities with XView, the plugin I use to connect PSX to X-Plane 10..

 

I'll investigate further tonight...

 

But, since I hadn't used X-Plane 10 for a while, this version 10.35 showed some nice improvements with the layout of some International airports, and even apparently better performance - although this might well be due to the SDD disk I am now using...

Jcomm...I went to the page and saw the requirement to also install the Python SDK.  Can you tell us a little more about that....and is this totally required to use the NOAA plugin?

Don't get confused by the name.

 

As with all Python scripts, all you need is Python and PythonInterface. Technically, when you install Python, you always install the SDK.

Mario, I have no prior experience with the use of Python and Python scripts within XP.  I went to the Python page, and stopped right there, when I saw so many download options...and came back here, to ask for further explanation and/or instruction.  So, could you please do a hand-hold explanation on what you need from that page...and then how to use it, to get your NOAA plug-in up and operating within XP. It would be helpful to others as well, with no prior Python experience of any kind...

 You don't need any experience with python, Just go to the NOAA website and use the Net Install method . What it will do is also install Python on your system and you are done. It's a straight forward installation.

if you do as ZB suggests, which was exactly what I did, please make sure to then disable any plugins you don't need, through the Python plugin CP in XP10...

Fear nothing, go ahead and install it - it blends PERFECTLY with the Gorgeous SMP, and my problems were due to an incompatibility between the NOAA plugin and XView, which also tries to inject PSX weather into X-Plane 10 ...

Get the full installer. When you run it, set 32 bit or 64 bit ( I use only XP10 64 bit in Win7 64... ), and check bellow the plugins you really want to enable. It'll do it all for you! Having Python in yor system is no problem, but please void programming in Python! You'll get a silly tendency to shift left and right when you talk to someone trying to discuss some plan....  Shifting left and right while walking has also been identified by medical doctors as one of the symptoms of prolonged exposure to Python programming ...
