Certain Keys don't work.

Recommended Posts

Captains,

I have a strange problem. Certain keys do not work unless I use shift + key .e.g SHIFT+L (will give me "L" in CAPS ) but without the SHIFT it will not do anything. Same with B / T .

I noticed this when trying to communicate with the ATC on vatsim.

Is anyone facing this problem ?

I am thinking it could be the Plugins which I am using like Autogate / PilotView / Plugin Admin / NOAA Weather / FlywithLUA / Xtraffic / Xsquawkbox / Seatraffic.

Would appreciate if someone could help.

Thanks.

If this is a desktop computer and you have another keyboard, try that.

My key commands started acting crazy a few months ago and, while other things seemed to be fine, it turned out that a new keyboard took care of the problems.

John,

It's not the keyboard , this is only under XPX.

BTW I did try a different keyboard but still the same.

It''s also the same on the laptop, so I am thinking it is one of the plugins.

I think it is the Pilot view plugin. I moved it and the keys are working

PilotView is an old-school X-Plane plugin, it was fine 10 years ago but can be no longer considered user friendly. Ditch it and use X-Camera instead, it's really very good.

Yep.  I guess I go with X-camera.

But I hate updating windows.

I'm glad you figured it out.  My old keyboard worked with other things too.  It was just X-Plane...

Go into Windows updates and tell it to upgrade only Windows - not all the other stuff...  Works better.

Hey John,

Actually it was not PilotView but the other Xtraffic plugin. Now PilotView is working fine and even those keys.

Yeah I guess I should update only windows.

Thanks.

Topic starter Zulu B mentioned:

I have a problem with the letter "l" (that is an L in upper case) .....

I just Installed XSquawkbox and had the following problem:

I cannot get my full name entered in the Name field before connecting and VATsim requires a full name or you cannot fly.

As soon as I type the letter "l" in the name field XSquawkbox freezes and won't allow more data entry (screenshot).

It looks like the keys are getting mapped. Are you using any other  plugins ?  Can you delete Xsquawkbox and reinstall ?

Yes I have other plugins .. but I am new to xplane and XSquawkbox so I do not not know their plugins technically.

My question is .. how does another plugin capture a keyboard key ?

My thought is .. when entering data into XSquawkbox (or anywhere else in Xplane) it should have "focus" .. and other apps should not be able to interfere (capture keys).

Is that a correct way of looking at it?

"Can you delete Xsquawkbox and reinstall ?"

As far as I know just remvoing the XSquawkbox Plugin would effectively delete it.

A reinstall would be just Unzipping the downloaded XSquawkbox file again.

I am wondering if anyone with XSquawkbox installed could test an see if they see the same problem I have?

@Vonmar,

Firstly move all the plugins and then try it.

And yes it is just unzipping Xsquawkbox and putting it under Plugins.

I had my doubts on the Xtraffic and Seatraffic plugins so I have removed them and don't need them.

The other thing is that blank window which is popping in your screenshot which looks like the ATC list window of Xsquawkbox. For this go in to Xsquawkbox Preferences and assign an another key.

Zul B,

Thanks for the replies here .. much appreciated.

" Firstly move all the plugins and then try it."

All except Xsquawkbox plugin .. I assume?

"The other thing is that blank window which is popping in your screenshot which looks like the ATC list window of Xsquawkbox. For this go in to Xsquawkbox Preferences and assign an another key."

Ok, I can try that.
I assume the assignment is from inside Xsquawkbox ... program , and not editing a file .. correct?

BTW, I have not seen an ATC list box yet ... appreciate that info.

@vonmar

Yes move all other plug ins except Xsquawkbox.

Goto the plugins Menu in XPX / Xsquawkbox / Preferences / Toggle Who's Online - it is here that you can assign - deassign keys.

@vonmar

A question , did that blank window popup when you were typing in your credentials ? or was it already showing before that ?

Ok, I need to do that next.

"A question , did that blank window popup when you were typing in your credentials ? or was it already showing before that ?"

As soon as I typed a lower case "L' .

*****

Form my test just prior to this post:

First I checked Perfs inside XSBox (screenshot).
Did not find a key to edit there?

Next I tried a login to XSBox using your trick ... use Shift + L (uppercase) and it worked.

so my name has upper case L's.

Then I connected to VATSIM OK and did a flight plan and filed it as a test.

No errors seen.

Then I checked Vroute .. and yes I showed up as looged on .. with upper case L's in my name (screenshot).
Can you see that in the screenshot?

So, something is trapping the lower case L's?
