I had a fatal error occurred in FSX. It was due to a faulting module, facilities.dll. Does anyone know how to fix this? FSX will not start. Thanks in advance.

One person accidently fixed this problem with my suggestion of disabling all add-on scenery in the Scenery.cfg and then reenabling one at a time.  The problem went away after reenabling. 

 

The following suggestion is from the AVSIM CTD Guide, page 6:

 

Delete/Rebuild your Facilities/Scenery Indexes and Shader Folders – These are temporary folders and should be deleted periodically (they will be rebuilt):

Facilities/Scenery Indexes are located in C:\Program Data\Microsoft\FSX\(hidden).  For P3D, instead of Microsoft\FSX, look in LockHeed Martin\Prepar3D v2 for the indexes.  Delete the Facilities and Scenery folders. They will be rebuilt.

Delete the Shader folders located in C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\Local/Microsoft\ FSX\Shader10 and Shader folders (hidden). The Shader 10 folder is created when you enable DX10 Preview in FSX.  The Shaders folder for DX9 will always be created. For P3D users, there is only a Shaders folder in C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\LockHeed Martin\Prepar3D v2 folder.  When you restart FSX/P3D, these folders will be rebuilt.  Deleting these temporary folders has also been known to fix some CTD’s.

Firehawk, I tried your recommendations and it fixed the facilities.dll. Thank you. But now I have another module error: sound.dll. Why is that? FSX failed to start again.

Are you using on-board sound or a dedicated sound card?  Make sure the drivers for the sound card or on-board sound is up-to-date.  I use a driver updater program that is freeware to use.  It will scan your system for out-of-date drivers for your CPU, system bus, USB ports, etc., and then offer to download and install the latest drivers but usually for a fee (most are around $20 for a year).  There is one that is currently free called Driver Booster - http://www.iobit.com/.

 

If this does not fix your problem, then, move your fsx.cfg to a temporary folder, restart FSX and see if this fixes the problem.  If it does, then there is something wrong with your FSX.cfg.

Nope, fsx still said fatal error, restart fsx.

Most likely the problem.  Did you try another USB port to plug the USB headset?

I've tried that and still; a fatal error occurred. Its still the sound.dll

I have never seen this error before in FSX but the latest version comes with SP2 or Acceleration (not both).  If you have your Acceleration DVD, recommend you reinstall it.  The latest version is dated 9/26/2007.  What a lot of individuals do is install FSX and then Acceleration.  Then they see somewhere that there's an SP1 and an SP2 that updated FSX.  So they install them afterwards and totally destroy they installation of FSX.  SP1 is installed with Acceleration.  Acceleration IS SP2.  SP2 is the freeware version.  Acceleration is the payware version.  Both are coded differently.  SP2 is coded so you cannot use the payware stuff that came with Acceleration so it obviously will cause FSX to crash if not installed properly.
