Photoscenery : v2.4 vs v2.5 - VAS

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Some of you already know that I have a fullsize 737-900 cockpit which uses P3D v2.4.

Because of the work on the panels and programming in SIOC I have not updated to v2.5 yet.

Surely I have read many topics about v2.5 so I know about fixed menu issues ( drop in free VAS ) and some other improvements , like correct colors when using Night Environment.

For me the most important to know is if v2.5 looses the free VAS less fast then with v2.4.

Now when starting a flight at Amsterdam Schiphol I have 1.037.540 of free VAS.

How longer I fly the lower the free VAS is getting.

After half an hour there is only 467.000 of free VAS.

And after 30 minutes there is only 395.000 left.

The system is powerfull enough and P3D performs and looks good.

When I stop the flight , uncheck the photoscenery for that country ( then it uses FTX Global + Vector ) and continue flying I have allmost 100.000 more free VAS .

The reason why I am hasitating to upgrade is because ASN did not want to work with v2.4 over my network and it took me 3 days and HiFi Sim half a day to get it to work.

I would like to know if there are photoscenery users amongst you guys and what you experiences are ?

Thanks in advance...

My testing en environment :

- 3 cloudlayers ( 6/8 )

- photoscenery NL , Be

- flying north from just before Amsterdam going south at 6000 ft at 200 knots

- no instruments, just the outside view

- Lod 4.5

- ag all sparse

- ai aircraft 30%

- clouds detail max

The pc has no problem running this.

After loading in pause and P3D on 1 monitor : 1.400.000

After spreading the image across 3 monitors : 1.100.000

Then unpause Fs : 960.000

After 10 min of flying : 672.000

After 20 min of flying : 622.000

After 30 min of flying : 682.000 --> the amount of clouds is getting less ( P3D is doing this )

After 40 min of flying : 648.000 --> starting descent to 3500

After 50 min of flying : 545.000 ( reloaded the 3 cloud layers )

After 60 min at Brussels airport : 389.000

When I start descending to land on Brussels VAS drops to .

Sometimes OOM and sometimes I am lucky....

No one uses photo scenery ?

I use MegaSceneryEartth 2.0 for the United States in 2.5 and do not have any problems running it.   Granted, I can't turn on all 50 states.  I have to plan my flights carefully.  I can load 4-5 states with the PMDG 737 and my starting and ending airport being payware.  Anything over that and I am asking for the Ding of Death.

Correction : with many clouds I have LOD at 3.5.

At this moment I am making a testflight from Amsterdam to Rome.
That means turning on the photo scenery from NL (1 m/p) , Be (1 m/p) , Ger (2 m/p)  , Fra (2/5 m/p), Swi (1 m/p), Italy (1 m/p)

The weather is almost no clouds, so LOD is 4.5.
After 30 min of flying I have 416.000 left.
This is with trees on the photo scenery from NL + Be.

After 40 min of flights I am above France ( 2 m/p ) I have 785.000 left. There are no ag trees

So photo scenery resolution also has a great impact on VAS.

I will do some additional flights and if I can finish them without OOM I will upgrade to v2.5...

Hopefully ASN network will not give me headaches again

Yesterday I switched to v2.5.

Following a guide I kept all my addons and it went like a breeze.

Today I checked my VAS : I have about 200 mb more free VAS than with v 2.4..,

And, with the magic trick to gain 150 MB's to 1 GB more by going from Windowed Mode to Full Screen and back to Windowed Mode or open up the Display menu and go back to P3D, you'll have even more!!

Hi Jim,

Yep, that I knew.

Now I am going to resize the Orbx HD trees to 512x512. .

All Rex Direct + Soft Clouds cumulus Clouds are already resized.

So I can use full detail for Clouds.

Best regards,

Will Full Screen > Windowed > Full Screen work as well (I don't fly in windowed mode)

Yes.  There was a discussion about this in the FSX forum too.
