May 5, 201511 yr Moderator I have a feeling that Nick might make major revisions to his P3D guide as he delves a little deeper. He also only uses one monitor and I feel there are a LOT of P3D users who use multiple monitors. Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
May 5, 201511 yr Any type of luminosity or contrast adjustments can be nice if it works as expected, never used P3D yet (plan to just haven't had a chance). I have never tried HDR adjustments, but interesting indeed. Have any of you compared SweetFX (not SweetFSX) vs HDR vs ENB? I haven't tried any of them in FSX yet, all I did was make my own global adjustments to green mostly. When I was using Orbx stuff, I found the best thing possible was to crank the green saturation and luminance way up because their default color is just too bland (CRM and NCAL are two examples), unrealistically so. Sure sometimes in those areas the color in real life does get that bland during periods of low rainfall, but don't we always want to fly over an area that is at its peak green time of year (or close to it). I think the best Orbx textures for color and contrast are still Alaska, and maybe Scotland (or was it Ireland, I forget which). Anyhow, NCAL looks ok but the green needs to be greener, give me some more SAT or LUM. Sorry to off-post... I use Reshader + SweetFX 2.0 with HDR turned off and it looks awesome to me and is performance friendly. May 6, 201511 yr Commercial Member His last tirade bashing p3d and praising fsx shows that despite his credentials he has a narrow minded and out of date view of simming. I have used his guide years ago in fsx and it was great, and was happy to try out his settings in p3d, but after reading his thread i feel he has lost credibility recently with his comments. He states that he doesn't like prepar3d and apart from shadows it is no different to fsx and yet he is using it on a single screen at average resolutions. I don't see how he can say they are the same if he really knew his stuff. Prepar3d handles high resolutions and more detailed graphics much better than fsx ever did. If I run my fsx at 4k with all my add ons I get 10ish fps. If I run prepar3d with all the exact same asn, orbx, airports etc I get 30fps and have better graphics detail. P3d has its faults but it is clearly more capable as technology and displays have moved forward. It is miles ahead when pushing bigger displays and higher resolutions as fsx cannot make use of modern hardware. His inability to accept that and make sweeping statements just makes him look foolish. May 6, 201511 yr After all that it is well made but the performance hit is quite to heavy for me despite the fact that i encounter 3-5 second freezes every 5 minutes. Hey MJ, Just throwing this out since I see you were getting a situation similar to mine a while ago. Now, mine seemed to happen regardless of the aircraft, but the "3-5 second freezes every 5 mins" brought flashbacks of me wanting to throw my new computer out the window. And I'm a firm believer of offering any and all suggestions when it comes to resolving an issue that's driving a fellow simmer batty, because Lord knows I've been there.... and then read a post that...zap....fixed my issue in an instant! Look at my post here http://forum.avsim.net/topic/462985-weird-freezing/?p=3185015 Hope this is your issue, and this trick fixes it for you. May 9, 201511 yr I have posted this before from a guy on SOH who is a brillint painter ,it is from some one who seems to know what he is talking about! "Exactly right Rick. I've been an airbrush artist for 57 years. Hot rod boats, cars and airplanes. I'm lucky to have an advantage working with light and transparency for all of those years.I've seen the comments that P3D is just some cloud shadows. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The light rendering in P3D is dynamic in three dimensions, in that you can stack specs and alpha to produce live color changes depending on light, angle and direction. Once people begin to understand how to utilize this function, we'll be off to the races.I've spent the last two years immersing myself in learning the tech. I'm just scratching the surface.Pretty amazing stuff...." as I said before the best is still to come, the photo,s I saw on nicks colum were to put it mildly awful he had made P3d look like fsx,in my humble opinion mr N seems to need to look outside his small and narrow world now and again peter
May 9, 201511 yr Can anyone shed any light why this always happens at more or less the same point, i.e. when just about to land? That dreaded OOM/VAS, despite moderate settings having discarded Nick's settings. Or is it just something that happens only when using the PMDG 737 or 777 aircraft and ASN. Is anybody else having the same issues using these planes and weather engine? Share your thoughts please. Rick Almeida

Hi Rick, Switch to FS Global Real Weather and your system will have a lesser VAS load for weather. ASN has a high VAS footprint, so this is most probably one of the leading contributors to you experiencing OOMs. Cheers, Jerome
May 9, 201511 yr Thanks for that, David & Jerome. Will give it a shot. Luckily I had FSUIPC auto-save, otherwise it'd have been a complete waste of time. I cannot believe that here we are in the 21st century with hardware nearly a 100x more powerful than what took Man to the Moon, and yet we cannot have a sim---any flavour---that cannot cope. Amazing! Is anybody else having the same issues using these planes and weather engine? Share your thoughts please. I got a landing OOM yesterday and I know EXACTLY why it happened in thiss scenario. LatinVFR didn't MIPMAP their HD textures. I was landing in KSAN-San Diego and the second it loaded in I saw all the buildings of KSAN as black textureless geometry for about a second while the 2k textures loaded in. DINGDINGDINGDINGDING. I push the limits already so that did not help. I have my textures resolution set for 1024 but if a plane paint job or airport texture sheet doesn't have that resolution in a MIPMAP or Native form the SIM engine is forced to load that texture. That is why your PMDG 737/777 looks so good despite setting lower graphic settings; it's still loading the 4k textures that wrap around most PMDG aircraft and is one of the reasons the 737/777 are VAS hogs. Likewise, because KSAN had no MIPMAPS the engine was forced to load 2k textures instead of 1k textures which overloaded my VAS and gave me an almost CTD. I was able to land and finish the flight thankfully because I try to leave a little bit of a buffer zone. You pesky HD airports and HD planes! KMCO-Orlando has the same problem. If I start at the airport I am fine but if it is my finishing airport the second it loads all those HD textures DINGDINGDING. May 9, 201511 yr Hi Brian, That's precisely why I've taken all the favourite PMDG 737 and 777 liveries I use to Photoshop and scaled them down from 4096. You could do the same with your KSAN textures, if you setup a batch process it shouldn't take more than a few mins. to convert them all to the size you want. Cheers, Jerome

Hi Brian Like you I have the KSAN; like you I too run textures resolution at 1024. Thanks for that PMDG737/777 explanation. Makes a heap of sense as I never get OOM when flying the Majestic Q8-400 in/out of any Orbx/FSDT airports. Luckily I have FSUIPC set to auto-save. At least I can get some joy out of a flight. May 9, 201511 yr I wish I had your PS skills to be able to do that. I can only sit on the sidelines and go green with envy. Corker of a suggestion. Hi Rick, You don't have to use Photoshop, there is GIMP that works too for example, GIMP is freeware and available here http://www.gimp.org/. It's really easy, you simply change the number 4096 to 2048 or 1024, depending how far down you wish to scale. There are many tutorials available, for example: http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-tutorial-quickie-scale.html YouTube also has guidance if needed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mpk-0eUhrk I encourage you to try it, you'll be amazed how easy it is, even if you don't have PS skills ^_^ Cheers, Jerome
May 9, 201511 yr Hi Rick, . Hence his "Bible" is based on mostly default or Flight1 scenery and doesn't include any tips that would be useful in any way, shape, or form to anyone using any Orbx scenery. Cheers, Jerome Should you not ask Orbx for useful tips about their scenery, I don't think Nick should give tips on Orbx scenery as I can't see Orbx doing the same for Flight1's scenery.

The whole idea is to get the basics right and then get your &@($* over to MSE or ORBX and start to add settings again. ZORAN
