FSX .... End of an era

Recommended Posts

P3D is the Lab rat here, in time it will get there but for now FSX with Steve's fixer gets the most time, it just flat out works for me.

I fly em all FSX, P3D, XPX, DCS etc.

Seriously guys this isn't a club or a mutually exclusive dating relationship fly whatever the hell floats your boat at the moment and enjoy it.

The only limiting factors are money, HD space and time...

I prefer to fly the thing that requires the least amount of tweaking or the application of DirectX Fixing duct tape.   Thanks LM for P3D.  You restored my love of flight simming and removed the frustration of CTDing like it was 1999.    I get in it.  I go.    Welcome to the P3D family OP.  It is a smooth ride up here.

I finally uninstalled it last night. I bought the Flight1 king air B200 for P3D, which was my last plane that wasn't compatible other than the VRS F-18, which I never used.  It was taking up an SSD and I almost never fired up FSX anymore.  If only I could get the money back I recently spent on FSX

I had bought P3D and tinkered with it for a long time, but to me, it's the 777 release that made me switch.  I haven't looked back.  I didn't get around to uninstalling FSX, but haven't started it in months.

For me FSX, now through it's recent reincarnation FSX:SE, looks always like the endless begin of an Era, started by those mighty ACES Studios in 2006.

My rig can't run P3D v2. I had P3D v1.4, but gave up because I didn't see any advantage over FSX Std by that time. Then, I bought, and returned in less than 3 days P3D v2, not because I didn't like it and don't think it is a very good platform, but because it didn't run acceptably on my rig.

FSX:SE with DX10 Fixer gave me amazing performance, but because I am using FSX:SE only with PSX and PMDG 777 nd NGX ( and eagerly awaiting the 744 v2 !!! ), I even decided to go DX9 again :)  Somehow I get the feel that I can get even more stable and higher FPS this way with PSX.

My option was, for a while, a completely different platform - DCS World, and even IL2 BOS. Those are SUPERB simulators in terms of their unique flight dynamics, but I am at the very core of my beliefs against War, and found myself playing those sims exactly the way I never wanted them to be... as combat flight simulators. Apart from the fact that I do not like air combat, I was really feeling ridiculous playing it, like a kid, every night :)

So, indeed, and as always and everytime I get back to it, FSX IS the beginning of yet another Era, and PMDG, A2A, RealAIr and ORBX are supporting it sooooo well :)

I'm mighty confused.. This started of with Nick saying that, for him, FSX is dead & he is moving on to P3D.

This has really turned into a bun fight with guys (& Jim of course) rattling sabres & knocking FSX or P3D or what ever.

ALL that was needed was a "Good Luck, tell us about the journey" message to Nick, so, here's mine..

Nick, Welcome to the 'Dark Side' .Wishing you all the best. It's actually great fun. Just remember, there will be a few teathing problems, just like any complex program. Consider P3D as a completely new sim, as we did when we moved from FS9 to FSX, & there will be a few compatibility issues as we had before. LM, as we know, has upgraded the sim about 10 times now. Enjoy!!

flight simulator stability is the key ....... can be a rollercoaster ride at times whatever you use.

Thanks Wobbie you hit the nail on the head :-) I've actually been a member of Avsim for years but had a problem with my account so had to start again. I've been using computer flight Simulators since 1981.

My first sim was on a BBC-B Micro. 747 By a company called DACC if my memory doesn't fail me.

I have probably owned every flight simulator since right upto P3D now and the DigitalCombat stuff.

I should have really seen some of the replies coming I suppose.... Online is not like it used to be in the dialup days, CompuServe and BBS's :-(

Hey Nick, I started in the old days with a Radioshack TRS-80! Block graphics then I moved over to Spectrums. Ahhhh, those were the days... wire-line mono graphics!

I still run 2x versions of Fs9, of which one is my favourite.. 'Golden Wings', a regressed version (early aircraft to 1930's ish!) & P3D.

I miss those dial-up days.. I could recognise that beeping sound when connections took place. In the very early days, we build our modems, they were sound operated, & picture a box with 2 rubber cups, toilet pipes, to fit over the telephone handset!

Dunno why you got all these, shall I be harsh & call them 'trolling' responses. It almost looked like a 'p_ssing' contest.

Anyhow, have fun with P3D, & as a diversion, download the HMS Bounty from here or Simviation. It's great fun sailing around, & it has been created by the most creative team of freeware guys. The way I feel is that if a guy, or team makes the effort of creating something interesting, I will support them. They are the backbone of our hobby. There are so many 'fun' add-ons out there, Flight simming does not have to be all about flying! :p0503:

Cheers,

Robin

We had to mod the TRS-80 to have true desenders in those days.. the letter Y would take up the same space as the letter A. The tail of the Y did not drop below the line.

Cheers!

Great choice Nick. You won't regret it. Lots of enhancements over FSX/SE.

I for one am happy with FSX:MS and have no plans to switch to :SE until such time as the aircraft I fly and several FS accessories are Steam compatible. P3D is probably off the radar.

For years the hardware tried to play catch-up with the software and never succeeded for me even with a top-flight PC. The scenery looked better but the hit on frame rates was always a disappointment.

But with no new version of FS for 9 years the hardware has now caught up and flying complex aircraft like Concorde-X into detailed airports like Heathrow or JFK is a delight. Yes, there are OOM issues but loading a saved flight is usually enough to overcome those.

Now retired I have loads of free time and I've never enjoyed FSX more.
