DX10 water animation and REX4

Recommended Posts

So, after installing Steve's DX10 fixer a few years ago, I was able to get the default water textures and animations back and have been enjoying them ever since.  I just recently updated my REX4, however, and, yes, once again, all my themes were deleted.  I tried restoring from my backup, but that didn't work.

So, my question is about the integration of DX10 and REX4.  Particularly, I'm wondering if I can install new REX 4 textures, but leave the wave animations box unchecked and retain my wonderful DX10 wave animations with whitecaps relative to wind speed.  Can I use REX4 color textures without affecting the whitecaps animations (I'd actually like somewhat duller and darker textures than at present)?  Or should I leave both color textures and animations unchecked when installing new themes?  If I use a community theme, such as one of Iain's excellent sets, which has color and animation settings, but leave those boxes unchecked in my config, will it skip those when installing the rest of his theme and leave my DX10 whitecap animations intact?

Thanks for any insights.

Basically, if you don't change any textures in REX the ones you have are safe. So you're instincts are spot on, don't select wave animations.

I don't know when you updated REX but at some point they added a DX10 compatible selection on the main er..selection  page.

Your assessment and Ron's are spot on, but the REX4 DX10 water animations are far better looking IMO than the default water animation.  The "White Caps", "Cinematic", "Distant Caps" and "Distant Caps 2" sets also have very good DX10 white caps.  My overall fav is "White Caps".  I've found these animations look far better using 32 bit, vs. DXT1, but be aware that weaker computers will struggle using 32 bit wave animations.
