How to create VFR flight with VoxATC?

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, or if I even understand VFR with VOXATC. I have no problem setting up and flying IFR flights, but VFR is kicking my &@($*.

Starting on page 46, unless I'm wrong, it's were I see information on VFR flying, starting with the flight service station. However, what do I have to do in VOXATC setup in order to make it work, or how do I make my own VFR flight plan for VOXATC to recognize it?

Well, I thought I figured it out, but I didn't.  If I try one of the VFR flight plans that came with VoxATC, like the Kansas City to Eppley, VoxATC starts with the screen asking me to tune to ATIS. If I create my own VFR flight plan, VoxATC starts at the radio check screen. What gives, and how or with what program was the VFR flight plan created with?

Well, a couple of things I can think of.

Firstly, is your origin airport towered or non-towered?  If it has a tower, you would first be told to tune to ATIS, then clearance delivery, then ground, and lastly, tower.  If it's non-towered, you would first be told to contact Unicom (radio check or hit '0' to bypass), then FSS to open your flightplan, then announce your taxi to the runway.  While this is not 100% realistic, this is how VoxATC handles VFR flights currently.

All of my flights are created within the FSX flight planner.  So, nothing special needed.

I've recently been in contact with Tegwyn about how VoxATC handles VFR flights.  I gave him a number of suggestions to tweak Vox in order to more closely follow the way VFR flights are done IRL, at least in the US.  He seemed very receptive, and while not promising anything, he did say he liked the ideas very much.  Fingers crossed.

I'm crossing my fingers too, hopefully he will take your advise in consideration for a future update.  As for weather a tower or non tower airport, I normally only fly in and out of tower airport, so I was testing this in a tower airport, yet, it didn't ask me for ATIS first.  I set up my flight plan at SimBrief.com, and download it to FSX as a VFR flight. I loads just fine in FSX, and recognizes the flight plan as a VFR flight, but still no joy.

FYI, I tried just setting the VFR flight with FSX only, and it still didn't start with asking me to check the ATIS. Instead it started with the radio check, then continue with asking for permission to start the engine, or pushback and start.

Right, so yes, it must be a VFR flight as far as FSX goes. You said you tried making a VFR flightplan in the FSX planner, correct? If you're departing from a towered field then you should be told to tune to ATIS first. If you're not told to do that then something is wrong. Maybe the airport bgl doesn't have the correct comm frequencies. What airport are you trying? If you have Airport Design Editor you can look up the comms and see if everything checks out, or I can take a look if you don't. Also, if you can attach the flightplan you're using I can try it out and let you know.

Kansas City International (KMCI) is the airport I flying from. The thing is that if I load the VFR flight plan that came with VoxATC, it ask to tune to ATIS. If I create a simple VFR flight using FSX built in planner, it doesn't. I do use Imagine Simulation scenery for Kansas City.

If you do not load any flight plan in fsx, voxatc will start in VFR. But only in 6.52, before  if you do not load a flight plan you get a fatal error.

So, are you saying that I shouldn't create a VFR flight plan in FSX, and just create one in the aircraft using the G1000, which is what I use on my King Air 200? How will VoxATC figure out how to open my flight plan when I call Flight Service Station?

Well, not sure what gives, but instead of flying the King Air 200, I decided to fly the A2A Cherokee out of San Juan Puerto Rico, heading to St Thomas. VFR worked fine leaving Puerto Rico, and even got traffic advisory in route. It got corky trying on the approach to St Thomas. I got as far as getting a vector on a 45 to land on runway 10, then nothing happen. It's like it forgot about me as I was coming to a final approach. I even try to announce my final, and all it kept saying is my call sign and go ahead. No matter what I said, it kept saying the same thing.

Okay, I think I got it working now. I've made two VFR trips at two different airports, and it worked from start to finish. I'm good to go.

I am not sure because i never fly vfr with voxatc.

I was so used to IFR, that when I decided to try VFR, I got lost. I normally like to fly IFR plans, but with smaller, and slower airplanes like the Piper Cherokee or Cessna 182 and 172, I rather fly them in VFR if possible. Happy flying now!

Now that  you have succeeded could you answer your own question you posted before?

Thanks,

Dirk.

Dirk, what are you talking about? If you read the thread, you can see the problem is solved.
