I have to ask what is Microsoft idea behind not allowing users to control updates in Windows 10?

I'm still waiting for the fine print on the  upgrade.  Can you get an iso? I bought a 3-pack win 7 HP upgrade sku when 7 first came out, one of those licenses is uninstalled.  Can the 10 upgrade be applied to it in the future?  Does the 7 upgrade have to be installed first and activated (I assume to make it "genuine")?  Same thing if you want to reinstall in the future.  Have to install 7 first?

Ah a fellow Cisco person. I'm going for my CCNP. I tell you, it's effin easy compared to Juniper. But, when it comes to firewalls, as I'm more a security geezer, Palo Alto is my main choice.

 

However, back on topic, are people around here really suggesting Windows just reboots when it's done installing updates? As in, just  "Hey rebooting bye bye" no sorry don't believe that, is there evidence to support this. Installing is one thing, rebotting your computer in the middle of what you're doing is another

Who uses Juniper? CCNP in which track?

Windows 10 Pro will only be able to DEFER updates, but not stop them completely. Eventually, they will install automatically.

 

Keep in mind that W10 will FORCE everything that used to be "Optional Updates" in W7/8.1/Vista. That means that your drivers for your graphics card, laptop touchpad, and even MOUSE are going to be updated automatically, with NO option to choose otherwise.

 

That's the problem, though. W10's updates will also include what used to be "Optional Updates" in previous Windows. That means your drivers will be updated automatically.

I will probably stick to Win 7 as long as I possibly can. At least MS is thankfully out of FS business now, one less thing for them to ruin. Generally it's definitely good idea to stay out of anything that reads "Microsoft", apart from XP, Win 7 and FSX.

Interesting comments. It is really fashionable to keep on bashing Microsoft. You just have to accept the whole pie, not just the pieces you like. What about the Office packages, Server packages etc?

It is also forgotten that MS gave us & the developers the sim 'engines' that Dovetail & LM are developing.

MS has obviously got to be responsible to their shareholders, as seen when they dumped/stopped & closed their Gaming Studio.

 

So, by going the 'downloadable upgrade route, as Steam does with their games, they are obviously saving a huge amount on world-wide shipping & inventory. Thus, no doubt, pleasing their shareholders, as reflected in their share price.

 

So, are updates important? of course they are! Why would we not want our software updated? We are going to allow it anyway, maybe with a bit of PC slowdown when it actually takes place. But, until it happens after the 29th July, we actually do not know how/if we will be inconvenienced. Remember, Windows 10 will be the last OS (so they say), constantly being updated, so we will always have the latest.  -- I'm very OK with that!

If they tried to automatically install the latest drivers for my graphics card without my permission, then they should expect to be bashed. Windows updates are one thing. Graphics card/sound card/any other card updates are quite another.

You are correct in saying that if they update all hardware stuff we have, without any permission from us, will be worth the bash. I wonder what the EULA says about random updates like that? Surley they are not responsible for updateing other manufacturers?

I guess we shall see when it's released. Trouble with the preview builds is they are not final, so we can't say 100% that the consumer release will be exactly the same. For example the preview builds send data back to MS for analysis, the final version won't. So in terms of how the updates will work exactly, we'll need to wait for reports from users who have used the release version

Fun thread to read but, it seems as though most of the worry is really getting down to Vid Drivers. I really don't think that a company like Nvidia is going to just say to MS..."Hey we will make our drivers and software and we will let your company decide how and when they will be loaded onto computers" . That just does not make sense. It is easy to get worked up over security and protecting our interest on line. It is has a lot to do with all the news on NSA and the Obomarama Circus going on here in the US. Like all things this too shall pass. The truth is that so long as our computers are running windows and connected to the Net then MS has always been able to load pretty much anything they want to our machines. They only let you and I think that we are in control. LOL!!

Like I mentioned before, this happened to me on both my laptop and my desktop. On both I have a partition with W10 Pro Technical Preview.

 

On my laptop, WU installed trackpad drivers as I was using the trackpad, which caused it to stop functioning while it was updating.

 

On my desktop, WU installed my yoke's drivers and graphic card's drivers right after I installed the OS.
