Great!

Somewhere? Where? Looks to me like a flight from Wallis over Furkapass and than to north along the Reuss valley and the Vierwaldstättersee?

Hahaha, exactly, Harald. But I thought a Luftwaffe Me 109 will not be tolerated over Swiss airspace, so I kept quiet about it

An interceptor has already started.

I assume that you use FSX with Switzerland Professional? It's a really impressive look. And which Bf 109 model do you use? As the Swiss Air Force used the Bf 109 E, too, there should also be a Swiss repaint available for you.

Beside all the jokes, in my FS2002 and early FS2004 years I led a kind of virtual Messerschmitt Club. After all these years, I found it very difficult to start and land the plane. Bf 109 flyers surely are a cool bunch.

Hi Harald, I use P3D 2.5 and freeware Italian photoscenery (which was developed for FSX, but works well also in P3D). This scenery has the advantage of penetrating deep into Swiss and Austrian space, that is why my Swiss screenies

"Bf109" is of course the correct name of the plane, but "Me 109" was the name used officially by the Luftwaffe propaganda publications as well as by the Messerschmitt company and the Luftwaffe personnel, who pronounced it "May hundred-nine". My one here  is the one from a2a/Wings of Power.

Your difficulties with taking off and landing are reported to be attributable to the landing gear (too narrow, too high), but also insufficient training of novice pilots, who had in many cases first trained with the Arado 96. The Arado had the wide inward folding landing gear like the FW-190. For those young guys the 109 must have been quite a shock at their first take off/landing attempts. I have read somewhere that some 20%  of all 109s had suffered some kind of (mostly repairable) damage during take offs or landings. Most of this I think can be attributed to inexperience/rushed training of pilots, because the ones that knew the 109 well did not report such difficulties. They actually said that the 109 was rather easy to take off in, provided the pilot compensated the engine torque with left rudder. Btw also the Spitfire had a narrow landing gear structure, so I think that the narrow gear alone was not really the issue. The major cause for adrenalin boosts was the angle it splayed out at (the gear was part of the fuselage), which could on occasion cause the plane to suddenly turn upon landing. When the surprised pilot tried to over-compensate the turn, this could cause the plane to break its high gear or even to flip

But I think you know all of this already  .

Bernd,

thanks for the explanation. Has this scenery seasonal textures? The screenshots look somehow autumnal, nevertheless wonderful.

The facts about the Bf (Me) 109 are basically known to me, but I never deeply thought about the differences between a Messerschmitt and a Spitfire undercarriage. Thanks again! In my case, I meant that I had to learn to fly the 109 new after more then ten years absence from flying her - with exception of starting the engine occassionally and listening to her while playing with the throttle lever. Once I flew her quite well. Most difficult thing was always to find the correct landing speed between being too fast (hopping when landing) and too slow (danger of stalling). Your Bf 109 E may behave slightly easier due to being lighter. I once read that the early models had a weigh of ca. 3 tons, while late types (G, K) had more than the double weigh. The 109, although outdated, was equipped with heavier and more armament during the war because Germany lacked the means to build a successor plane. So the cell had to carry a weigh it never was developed for, thus giving this problematic behaviour at takeoff and landing.

Regards and happy flights!
