fsx-se Fsssssssst - every minute or so!

No this was not a rude word! It is an annoying sound I have been getting from FSX on my new PC - but get this it is also on X-Plane too!!!

It happens about every minute and sounds just like this fssssst with a sort of click at the end.

I have thought what sound effect it could be, but as it happens in X-Plane too I don't see how it can be a real effect.

It doesn't happen when I am not playing either sim. So it seems to be connected to either running a hi-res app/game or something caused by playing sound.

I am putting up with it for now, but it will get increasingly annoying as time goes on and I don't know why it's happening.

 

Can you help me?

Just a wild guess, but perhaps it is your audio driver or maybe the video driver if the video driver is also trying to control the audio.

Thanks for the suggestion.

The PC is new and I did have 'mess' with the sound, as initially the sound card didn't show on the device list, which included downloading the driver.

But I will have another look and see.

If your computer has onboard sound and then you added a sound card, then you likely need to go into the BIOS and deactivate the onboard sound.

Now there's a thought!

I do have that situation so I will have a look.

Naively I would have assumed the setting up of the added card would/should have done that.

But it's well worth me checking.

No luck with the on-board.

I've disabled the HD audo controller in the ROG settings in the BIOS.

But the annoying sound is still there.

I hardly request such things but.. could you record a video? Might be that some folks instantly recognise the problem by actually hearing the sound.

 

Receiving it in two very different applications is very unique. Perhaps also list all active background tasks or post the screenshot from the taskmanager.

Does the computer have a wireless network card, and if so, is it active? Might not be the problem, but had a system where the wireless NIC was performing a re-scan for available networks every 60 seconds, and whenever it did, it caused a momentary CPU spike, visual stutter, and noise in the audio. Just another thing to check...

There is on-board wi-fi, but as the supplied aerial didn't fit I have temporarily plugged in an old USB wi-fi stick I had which worked straight off the bat.

might be worth checking whether CPU or GPU fans are kicking in frequently to lower either temperature.

especially if you're located in UK, or continental Europe, given the record breaking temperatures we're experiencing right now.

I found the problem by using Process Explorer, which many people also use to monitor VAS in FSX. With my system, the biggest problem was a serious stutter in the FSX video, which occurred precisely every 60 seconds. In Process Explorer, I looked at all running processes, and saw one that would spike the CPU usage corresponding to the stutter, and it was a process being used by the wireless NIC.

 

You might want to try doing the same thing . If it's not your wireless, Process Explorer might show what other running service might be causing the issue.

Is Process Explorer realtime? Would I be able to look for something coincident with the sound when it happens. Or am I just looking at a log to see something occuring at the same interval?

I appreciate your help. This is becoming more annoying the more elusive it becomes.
