NGX TCAS

Recommended Posts

Since the last update my TCAS has been turning off by itself. I'll turn it on, do some more cockpit checks, and then notice that it is off. Sometimes it happens two or three times. I've downloaded the lasted update just to make sure I'm current and it looks like I am so any help appreciated. Thanks.

Can you be more specific? If you're still on the ground, TCAS is inhibited.

What mode are you operating in? What flight regime are you in? Are you using any external programs that could be interfering?

Hi Kyle, thx for the reply. Looks like my mistake--I've been turning it on while on the ground. I always did but I guess this last patch added some realism? In RW ops when is it turned on?

I don't recall any changes to this. Perhaps you're just now paying attention to it and it seemed different.

XPDR only. Not TA/RA, per FAA guidance.

XPDR just before pushback. TA/RA as part of the before takeoff flows (i.e. at/just approaching the holding point).

Back to XPDR as part of the after landing flows (i.e. just after vacating) then STBY/2000 once parked.

So it's different from 777? Because the manual say:"The transponder mode selector is defaulted to TA/RA in the 777, as this is commonly used even on the ground now since most airports 777s operate at use airport surface detection equipment (ADSE) to track aircraft on the ground."

Nope. A transponder is a transponder. The aircraft type really doesn't matter.

The tutorial was written to only one of many different ways to operate the 777. A whole bunch of airlines started operating in this way (my guess is it that it removed an extra step right before takeoff), which ended up causing issues for ATC, so the FAA recommended that the practice stop:

https://www.faa.gov/other_visit/aviation_industry/airline_operators/airline_safety/info/all_infos/media/2011/InFO11012.pdf

In order to satisfy the Mode C on the ground requirement for ground radar, only XPDR needs to be selected.

However -- if you're flying on VATSIM bear in mind that certainly in the 747 Mode C in Squawkbox/vPilot is triggered by selection of TA/RA.

This may have changed in the T7 though.
