Shimmering in VC: do you advice SGSS for AntiAliasing Transparency SuperSampling ?

Featured Replies

.. and if you read the thread from the beginning, you will see that that is exactly what the OP is after.  Not sure how you can equate 3X GTX980 to 1X GTX650

Guys, please. I know that faster CPU and/or GPU would solve any problem... But I am really after a possible final (and cheap) software tweak.

The SGSS really helped with the main problem, which was shimmering. Now I am just tweaking for a bit of FPS...

Interestingly, everything seemed OK even if running at <20 FPS... I start wondering if they are just overrated!

Kermit, as I mentioned, try 4 x multisampling instead of 8xS, that should give you some fps back.

Just to confirm, do you mean using "4xS" in the filed "Antialiasing - settings" of Nvidia Inspector?

My understanding is that "4xS" contains 1x2 Supersampling and 2x MultiSampling, while "8xS" contains 1x2 SuperSampling and 4x Multisampling, so your statement "try 4x multisampling instead of 8xS" is a bit confusing...

Could you please clarify?

Thanks

My settings:

FSX:

fps locked at 30

As a follow up, is the there a consensus about whether FPS are better locked within FSX.cfg or with Nvidia Inspector?

I currently have it locked in Nvidia, but that could be an easy "fix"...

I keep reading contrasting "opinions"on this !

thanks

It is not the video card, it is the cpu. FSX could care less about my three gtx 980 cards but I have to  have my cpu clocked to 4.4 to get any decent frame rates with all the add on scenery and heavy VAS aircraft I have.

I think ithe importance of CPU vs GPU also depends on your Poolsize in fsx.cfg...

I currently have Poolside > 0 because I think my CPU is more powerful than GPU (difficult to compare, really...).

I am not ready to buy more hardware right now, though.

I mean the 4x [4x Multisampling] option for Antialiasing - Setting.

This doesn't use any supersampling at all for the overall antialiasing.

This is easier for the GPU and gives a sharper looking image.

You should still use 2x Sparse Grid Supersampling for Transparency Antialiasing. 4x SGSS might be too much for your GTX650 but try it anyways.

Ah OK. I will give it a try, then.

So you feel that SS in FSAA is not that necessary, after all? I am using ORBX FTX scenery.

thanks!

I had the same problem at one time until I installed Rex and allowed it to inject a set of textures for everything.  Now, I don't get shimmers.  Granted, I also run DX10 and have tweaked my NI settings.  I really don't give it a good look now since I fly tubeliners...way too many other important things to concentrate on. lol

A good reason to drop those ridiculous "tubeliners" and go back to good old single props...  ^_^

OC your cpu to 4.5 or above and add a gtx 970 and I promise you that you will be able to have more AA options. Your video card is your bottleneck.

I think you are right, with right hardware, most niggly problems go away, and new options present themselves..

I recommend the settings in the AVSIM FSX Configuration Guide.  No shimmering.  Works for most.

With my OC 2600K @ 4.7 and my 3gig GTX 660ti, I can run fsx locked at 30 fps with 8xSQ & 2SGSS. A GTX 970 is an even better option, but then I would opt for a 4790K.

I will have to start saving, then... or find a new job!

Best regards,

is version 2.0.0 (24/11/2013) still the latest?

Thanks

Yes.  Nothing has changed.  I know a lot of people do not like old documents but FSX is still an old program.  The settings in this document were taken from several different sites and product releases such as those from FTX/Orbx.  I'm still trying to find the right settings for P3D though and we may make some minor changes in the near future.  Wish I could find the 'perfect' settings that work for everyone.
