Laptop question and recommendations

Recommended Posts

Actually this is kind of a 2 part question. I just changed jobs and will be doing a lot of travelling, and I'd like to do some simming on the road when I get the chance. I am looking for some laptop recommendations and along with that I am wondering what sim platform will perform best on a laptop. I fly P3Dv2 on my desktop but with it being so GPU dependent I'm thinking a laptop in my budget (around $1500 or less) may not work. I do have a license for P3Dv1.4, so that is a good option since I already have a lot invested in addons. I have also considered X-plane 10 (North America edition). So I am mostly wanting to get feedback from those of you who have used a laptop for simming. Also, I'd love some general suggestions on laptop specs and if there is a laptop you really like, please let me know.

I guess the last question I have is what aircraft addons have you successfully used on a laptop?

Thanks, everyone.

Cheers,

Todd

I have a slightly upgraded (RAM/SSD) one of these: http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/laptops-portable-pcs/msi-gt70-2pc-dominator-1233322/review

Runs P3D 2.5 and XP10 with plenty of addons (e.g. P3D with ORBX, REX, ASN, complex aircraft such as the NGX) just fine.  No the sliders are not all the way to the right, but it's plenty good enough.

If you are travelling, consider an XBox One controller and a DelanClip for TrackIR (rather than the rubbish TrackClip Pro), and you have a great ultra-portable sim setup.

As a setup, it served me very well last year when I was spending months on end in hospital as a carer (long story), and I've not really wanted for more performance since, even though it moves considerably less now.
