Looking to build a "light" gaming rig - no $5000 machine I need to mortgage though... : )

I am wondering if I should start with the video card. I've always liked the nVidia stuff, and would like to be able to run 3 monitors.

That said - mostly this is for FSX, P3D, and XP, but my son will likely game on it a bit (or a lot).

I'd like to keep the GPU budget >=$300 to start if possible, and work the rest of the computer around it.

Would like to keep the whole thing under $1K if we can. I realize the other components are for other questions, but thought I'd throw it out there since it might be influenced by the card.

Any guidance appreciated...

thanks

Andrew

Try this to start with and then shave off what you think you may not need.  Look beyond the sticker shock as it is posted currently at about twice what you want to spend.

I would take those components and then search online for other places that may have it cheaper.  The biggest cost will be the video card, but a 980 right now is a good choice.  Good luck!

Regarding the GPU.   The best bang for buck out the now is the GTX 970.  Showing UK prices

2 different types,  don't know the difference

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gigabyte-NVIDIA-Edition-Graphics-Express/dp/B00NQ862GY

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nvidia-GeForce-Strix-Graphics-Express/dp/B00NFFAW50

Difference in memory type, DDR3 vs GDDR5 (Asus vs. Gigabyte, respectively).  Of course, difference in manufacturer, although both make good cards.  Scrutinizing performance would take looking in depth at sites that cater to that.  Asus does outwardly advertise overclocking, if that's your thing too.

The list I posted was a good base to work from and if price is a real concern, you most certainly can downgrade to the 970, which I would recommend.  The 970 is still a good heavy hitter.  If it's future-proofing you're after, you may fair better with the 980, but considering it is rather new, the price will be higher.  The Asus is ranked #2 on the best seller's list compared to #11 for Gigabyte.

Oh the choices....

I will steal the thread, hehe, I'm planning to replace my GTX 560, primarily because P3D2. My budget is 200-250 euros, and I want to know, from your experience, which nVidia card in this budget range is the best solution for P3D2 and generally?

Thank you in advance!

Current system: ASUS PRIME Z690-P D4, Intel 12900k, 32GB RAM @ 3600mhz, Zotac RTX 3090 Trinity, M2 SSD, Oculus Quest 2.

One more for GTX970. Best bang for the buck and later on you can add another one for SLI and you are more then ok for the next few years.

Anyone using the GTX960 2GB? Been looking at posts till I am numb - many say that for FS9 (and to an extent FSX) the GTX960 is fine. I would want to use two monitors though (one for FSNavigator in FS9, the other for the sim)

Trying to economise a little on this new rig (i5-4690K CPU)..

For FS9 even my GTX 560 is more than fine, I was trying hard to bring FPS below 60. For FSX, well better cards will do some job in DX10 mode, in DX9 it is a waste of money.

Looking to build a "light" gaming rig

For multi-monitor the more VRAM the better, X-Plane and P3D can like more RAM in some circumstances and use logical cores. Possibilities:

i5-4690 + GTX960 4GB + 8GB DDR3 kit (1866 - 2133MHz)      £££

i5-4690 + GTX970 4GB + 8GB DDR3 kit (1866 - 2133MHz)      £££

i7-4790 + GTX970 4GB + 8GB DDR3 kit (1866 - 2133MHz)      £££ :(

i7-4790 + GTX970 4GB + 16GB DDR3 kit (1866 - 2133MHz)    £££ :o Not so light gaming!

All 970s have GDDR 5.

There is very little difference between these cards outside of the cooling solution.

YES... indeed!!! The i5-4690K and i7-4790K is what the OP should consider.

Yes, it's definitely one or the other! I am tending towards the latter and a GTX970 4GBs, but we'll see.

Thanks again for all the replies. Your time and input is genuinely appreciated
