Ground Environment Prepar3D vs FTX Global?

Recommended Posts

Curious if anyone has done any comparison on the new Ground Environment for Prepard3D (World Edition) with FTX Global.. as their website says that the two products arent compatible, you can only have one or the other installed.. Unsure how that would mesh up with existing FTX airports and addons though..

I'm not seeing much in the way of discussion on this just yet..

Curious.. thanks..

I wouldn't get GEX/GEP if you use Orbx addons. Obviously specially not if you own FTC Global. But any Orbx airport won't play nice with GEX. Vector and OpenLC also won't work well, obviously. And I guess there isn't much discussion about this because most use Global...?

I have both and many Orbx regions and airports; I uninstalled FTX global, Vector and OpenLC in favor of GEXP3D and UTX. I find it looks better and less of a performance hit. I have NO problems running FTX regions ( PNW, NCA, EUR, SCO, etc) with GexP3D and UTX. I get the best of both without the performance hit.

Other than performance and VAS usage, it is primarily and individual objective viewpoint. I know it runs better but I think it looks better. Someone else may not. I find the Orbx colors to be too bright and very unrealistic while the GEX colors are more understated. I would probably prefer something in between but GEX is closer to what I like than Orbx .

Thanks for this info.. how does night lighting compare.. ftx global had decent lighting, or so i thought at the time..

I'm going to have to dig around and find some FTX Global vs GEXP3d comparison videos and animated gifs perhaps..

Its a shame there (currently) is no real way to just disable FTX Global to switch back and forth, short of uninstalling.

Also, there doesnt appear to be a trial option on this.. which would have also been useful.

Again, night lighting is a matter of personal preferences. I think the UTX lighting is exceptional.

My biggest gripe with FTX GLobal when I had it installed was the night lighting.  Yes, the 3d lights were ok but the night tile textures were very dim so cities were not even noticable from higher altitudes which is very unrealistic.  I find GEX P3D along with UTX 2.0 to be superb (I do most of my flying in the US).

These are great.. i especially like the first person point of view.. easier to see the landscapes, although a split screen or overlay to compare would be cool too, still though, well done.

What specs are your machine you ran the tests with, curious.. i'm assuming this was done on a single screen at 1900x1080 type resolution with those sliders.  EDIT:  ah nevermind, i see you have a link to settings in the main thread.

Thanks! I dont really like those splitscreen comparisons, and overlay is nice but i didnt had the time  ;)

However, this is all not needed...just open the videos you want to compare in different windows (for the best experience on two different monitors). The videos are more or less in sync.

Yes Single Screen 1080p and i have a i5-4690k together with gtx970

Ftx Global looks thicker and darker colored as it was mentioned before i think.. i guess if the performance is better then GEP3D would win for me, although i'd also ask the question of accuracy/realism.. i think i'd be curious to see how this looks in comparison to photoscenery (Vector and UTX combined in).
