Mixture sensitivity

Recommended Posts

Something that been bugging me for a while but ive been ignoring it, when using the mixture control its very subtle until about halfway down then suddenly the RPM will drop to the point that if i don't push it up more the engine will cut out? Anyone else experience this? Im running the saitek throttle unit and all the axis are calibrated as far as i can see, its making leaning for taxi etc very tedious

You should check that the axis has a proper null zone set, both in the saitek controller software and in x-plane axis menu.

This said, it's been a long time since I last had X-Plane 10 installed, so, it might be that something got wrong with the mixture simulation in between ?

It depends on the plane.  Some are quite sensitive, others not so much.

As said, depends on the plane. There are some that get knob placement for more realistic mixture settings, and some that don't. Example, where I flew at an airport elevation of 4600' to start with, the mixture could easily be close to half way. Many of these models will just die at that setting. This is just one of those things, that some model creators don't get right. Especially if they are not familiar with flying planes at higher altitudes to start with. For me, mixture was always involved. Never used full rich, once the engine fired, as it was immediate lean for warm up & taxi. Otherwise, you could really tell the difference, even at taxi speeds.

OTOH, you can fly the default XP10 Cessna at 35,000' without a problem - engine runs beautifully with some leaning...

Good shout, ill double check the axis calibration on both software. Im getting the full range in x plane axis screen i know that much and im using the airfoillabs C172 so that's why i'm assuming there's a problem as its vastly different to what i'm expecting, i'm pretty much at standard day 200ft elevation nothing really extreme conditions wise, thanks guys ill have a check
