Purchased the Yak a few years ago and have always enjoyed flying it.

Go figure.... I just bought that in the sale on Monday....

Oh well, at least it was rather inexpensive with the sale price and all, and the developer gets a bit of money from it.

I actually spent about an hour in it last night, very, very nice.  Easy to control, nice sounds.  Spent a bit of time trying to do some aerobatics, but other than loops, I'm not all that good!

Just like another freeware aerobatics airplane for XPlane, this yak-55 ( don't know yet, but can see from the videos...) has a characteristics, a very true one, that no aircraft can reproduce when using FSX or P3D core FDM - the instant stop from a roll at max roll rate.

In FSX there is always too much inertia and a sudden stop isn't possible, as well as other stunt maneuvers that I've seen IRL being performed by these models.

Looking fwd to try this one !

Hmmm... As far as I know, in FSX core flight model, both moments of inertia (in this case along roll) and the Cl_p coefficient (that is, the damping due to roll rate) can be edited, so in theory there's nothing preventing to edit roll dynamics at one's likings. Maybe there's simply a lack of a good designed unlimited aerobatics aircraft, with regard to flight dynamics.

Another issue however is the "breaking" of FSX flight model in certain extreme maneuvers. I don't know if it's inherent to the flight model, or if it's simply due to a poor .air file (from 5:50 onwards):

From my experience, any combination of MoIs and stability derivates falls short from the effect we can get in XPlane.

I tried editing the default Extra, after I saw, for the first time in my life, an exhibition of the RedBull Air Races, and specially after having had the chance to fly as a passenger in an Extra 300 :-), but was completely unable to get that same "instant" response.

In this other video I recorded sometime ago, another flaw is evident, as, after I kill the engine by setting the mixture to full lean (around 0:45 ), the Extra starts climbing and making wild maneuvers and gaining altitude :-)  This flaw is ported to even the best models available for FSX, including, for instance, A2A's P51d...  We just have to find the right spot, and the inability to cope with this extreme situations comes to play...

And THANK YOU for reminding me about it !!!

It has been while since I made the OP, and when I installed 10.45b1, I completely forgot about the Yak-55 ...

Now trying to find out how it works with the fixed torque bug :-)
