When I installed Mandrake 10, everything I have was supported OTB except for my wireless NIC and 3D acceleration for my ATI 9800. However, I was able to get drivers for my wireless NIC fairly easily. ATI drivers were a little more work (ATI's fault, not linux) - but then again as I said I can dual boot back to XP if I need to play games. 3D is not needed to run X Windows.Everything on my system includes my Epson Stylus C64 USB printer, USB Logitech game controller, Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum sound card (with digital/optical output and firewire), ATI 9800 Pro (2D), NIC (non wireless), and cd burner with dvd. I also have read-only access to my NTFS partition and dual boot is easily supported.Of course, this is my system and after a little work everything runs perfect. Your milegae may vary. Then again, does everyone who has XP just run it without trying out different tweaks? Does every piece of hardware have support OTB in XP, or are drivers required to be installed? To me, both OS require about the same amount of "work" to have running at best performance.
