Just about to replace my 22" monitor. I have an old i7-920 overclocked to 4GHz (probably to be replaced by an i7-6700k before the end of the year) and a GTX 970. I will be going for a single screen setup (lack of space) and definitely want a monitor rather than a TV because of other interests. What resolution are you using for FSX and what size of screen?

27" Samsung monitor, 1920x1080.

Bert, I've read that text (word processing etc) tends to look quite pixelated on a 27", 1920x1080 monitor. How do you find it?

Kiwikat, I see that you also have a GTX 970. How well does it cope with the 2560x1440 resolution?

I am ok with 1920 by 1080, but sure it is even nicer at a higher resolution..

My system is general purpose as well. I just configured a new system and faced the same question. I selected an ASUS 27" 1080 monitor for two reasons. The first reason was my desk and its physical characteristics. The second was the increment of difference vs the price.

 

Most of the 1440 monitors I looked at had base footprints that would not work with my desk and protective desk matte. I have a nice "furniture" executive desk.  I only mention this because there may be a number of factors you might need to consider. So I recommend you do not dwell only on resolution for perhaps one application.

 

The second consideration I faced was the price vs the increment of difference. That coupled with whether I wanted to change my Windows display res settings each time I go from flight sim to general computer use and back. At almost $300 difference I just could not justify the increment of difference. Not at the same time as building a new system that included a case, power supply, MOB, processor, 16 GB DDR 2600, 4 GB nVidia 970 graphics card, and multiple SSD's (some for everyday and some for clone backups).

 

So what I suggest is that you look at your budget, your most critical needs, your more basic needs, and the increments you would like to have vs the price.

I had a look at that monitor in a local store but I'm not a fan of curved screens and also didn't like the ultra-wide format - it's very wide but not very high (deep?). I'm leaning towards either a 25" 1080 or a 27" 1440 monitor, neither of which I've been able to look at locally. The only thing making me think twice about the 1440 monitor is how well my 970 card will cope with the resolution. I know that FSX is very CPU-heavy but I use DX10 exclusively which offloads more to the GPU than DX9. The only other game I play is Project Cars and I would hate to pay the premium price for a 1440 monitor only to find that my frame rates were low (unlike FSX it's much more biased towards the GPU than the CPU).

A 970 is pretty powerful card... I would be very surprised if it cannot handle that resolution.

 

I would be more concerned about the CPU/Memory/bus etc pushing that many pixels..

A modest upgrade might be a 24'' running at 1920 X 1200. ASUS and Dell Ultrasharps are both good choices for these displays.

I have had great results with an ASUS VS24A.  Your processor and video card will not be stressed at that resolution, and it will not occupy much space on your desk surface.

I have a 27" 2560*1440 with a GTX 970 and it handles FSX P3D DCS fine. The only game that is not smooth is Total war Attila and that title was not smooth in 1920*1200 either (then with GTX 770)

I was hesitant to get the ultra wide but finally did and love it.  Got an LG ultrawide 34 inch (wouldn't get anything smaller), 2560X1080.  I use Ezdok and have no trouble with the somewhat limited height.  Very immersive.

 

With DSR it's amazing!
