fps boost with prepar3d with gtx 980ti over the 780ti on triple screens? Multiscreen vs single + recording flights via shadowplay movement capture...

Short gist here is:

-Anyone notice a big improvement over the 780ti (multi screens or 48" 4k's)..

-Any tricks to record the flight session and capture "looks" live and at 1080p or higher (16:9) while still at a 5760x1080 and scale down to 1080p, maybe fsrecorder?  If even just to record all movements in the cockpit and then later play it back (single screen later)?

Seeking any input from anyone who might have gone from a 780ti 3GB to a 980ti (6gb?) and particularly on a 3 screen setup (or maybe on a 48" 4k tv type setup).. 

 

Right now running 5670x1080 on my 24" 1080p native screens I actually get decent performance under the average circumstance with either p3d v2.5 or 3.0.. its when you start introducing traffic and particularly bad weather + clouds that things get iffy.. (i dont use NI settings and when I did i never went beyond sgss 2x, as 4x was killer on fps with clouds)..

 

I'd say i run what might be considered 3/4 sliders.. See this link for settings from 2.5.. i havent fleshed out the ones ill use with 3.0 just yet.

 

Screen changes in the future for easier "live" flight recordings (no replays needed in single screen mode):

So i'm considering a few "future" options to make this work better in all situations..

 

One is that the oculus rift production one will be out soon.. i figure on using that as the primary "display" assuming its worth trying and has decent performance even with the 780ti (maybe not 3d, as i'm not sure the 3d will perform well, or maybe it will)..

 

Another was to switch to a single screen 48" 4k set.. however, technically this is MORE pixels and I'd need something better card wise.

 

Then there is the combo idea of going 48" screen + a new graphics card (or not a new card and use the 780ti for now)..  Single 48" screen because I can record videos at the right scale resolution for saving to things like youtube instead of having to fly the route, do the p3d recording, then playit back when running single screen to do the actual shadowplay recording.. (or just always run with one single 24" screen).. i prefer having the multiple screen width when flying, but not record that obviously, as the recording is rather useless.. extra steps needed..

 

So going oculus rift or a single 48" or both is more ideal for "live" recordings.. 

 

 

In terms of the cards..

 

I noticed evga has several flavors.. It appears clock speed increases as price does..

I'm guessing this model is probably most ideal of the bunch, assuming a benefit.. There is also the MSI Geforce Gaming one as well, slightly slower clock speeds

 

Side note:

My current cpu is still the i7-4930k with HT on (6x2), i tried it with HT off and things didnt really change (overclocked to 4.4)

My exact video card is the EVGA 780ti (03G-P4-2784-KR )

 

The bandwidth differences between my old evga at 288.38 and the new card at 336.5 i guess arent that different, not sure how much of a gauge that is..

I second that. I would also love to get some feedback from someone who made that move. I'm running three screens of a GTX780 (no ti) and I was thinking about getting a 980ti. However, after the somewhat frustrating experience Jeroen reported, I dropped that idea. However, Jeroen is only running a single screen. Maybe with three screens the difference in performance would be worth the investment...

I have evga GTX 780 seems to work very well. Got it two years ago and prior to that a GTX 480. Big difference between the two. Should I expect the same difference between the 780 and the 980Ti ?

From what I have read I see little performance boost in FPS in upgrading the GPU.   But it does seem to improve other aspects.  I have a 780 (6GB) across 3 27" displays running just fine.  I don't think I would see any big improvement, at least for the cost, of upgrading to a 980 or even dual.  My GPU purchase will probably line up with DX12 - when all the coponants, hardware, software and P3D are DX12 compliant.

I agree, 980 is a bigggggg jump in cost from a 780. Good idea to wait for DX12 before purchase.

My 780ti in 2013 was around $650, about the same as a 980 gtx right now.. sell old.. likely net cost around $300-$350 i suppose.. or maybe SLI and get a second 780ti.. though for me, having 3GB on the 780ti and adding a second, wont increase the ram, its shared as 3GB across both.. The prepar3d v3 recommended ram size for video appears to be 4GB.

Generally speaking each generation of nVidia cards tends to have about a 20% boost in GPU performance, when comparing cards at similar "steps" in the performance spectrum (which in this case is a 780TI and a 980TI).

 

Then factor in that FSX and even P3d V3 have features that are CPU-limited, it's not surprising that the improvement is modest. I went from a GTX 680 to a GTX 980TI (2 generations) and I saw about a 15-25% improvement in fps with P3d 2.5. There was an additional small bump with V3, but I found that I could increase the graphics settings that are GPU sensitive, with minimal loss of frame rates.

Having just pre-ordered the Oculus Rift Retail.. now i started digging into that requirement that calls for a gtx 980 or higher.. from what i read the 780ti is actually a bit better, short of full dx12 support than the 980 gtx base (not the 980ti)..

 

This has me wondering however, if perhaps even though spec for spec i think the 780ti should be at least as good as their baseline requirement if i might be better off at least adding another 780ti ($300) vs adding a full on 980ti ($650 minus a sale of the 780ti, so net difference of maybe $500 increase).

 

Also appears you need the FlyInside app or similar to make it all work ideally.

Cool, though based on this thread, sounds like a 900 series or higher is needed for Nvidia Gameworks which is being employed by the flyinside software in the near future based on this

I can tell you that last night I was @ 38 FPS on the ground using the PMDG 777. That's at 1440p.

Ah nice.. mine at 5760 x 1080 (going off memory, as i'm still reinstalling p3d v3 up from 2.5) used to hit something like say 20-38 depending on scenery and weather.. i've not done much with the big jets, but i do know they are demanding.

 

I do recall that new york city x was the biggest drainer of fps.. often near the city like 18-22 fps with my 780ti with no weather in play.. generally everywhere else even with thick weather and storms its tolerable and above 25 (i think) and thats without any SGSS (frames set to unlimited)

 

Looking at baseline 980 gtx's vs 780ti.. appears the 980 baseline wins by at least 9-10%.. so the numbers mentioned in here of a 980ti maybe being 20% better are probably right (in terms of raw gaming power, maybe not p3d), here is a comparison of 980ti vs 780ti
