Norway Pro (Work in Progress)

Recommended Posts

Norway is a fantastic country for scenery and aviation, but unfortunately the default scenery is somewhat lacking in detail. The data inside OpenStreetMap is minimal and there is quite a lot missing. Therefore, I've started worked on a scenery for Norway which makes use of the following:

  • Country-wide data generated from kartverket vector data. This data includes the following:
    • Full coverage for forest and woodland
    • Full Road and Rail network
    • Most major buildings, e.g. Hospitals, schools, factories
    • Location of industrial, agricultural and residential zones, cities, towns, etc.
    • Treelines in agricultural areas
    • Accurate VFR landmarks such as masts, communication towers, light-houses, windfarms
    • No trees and shrubs all over the airports, yay!!!
  • Autogen-based residential zones using custom Scandinavian-style buildings generated with W2XP
  • European city centres similar in style to Czech/Slovak scenery I did.
  • Other data taken from OpenStreetMap where available (e.g. Tall buildings, obstacles, piers)
Here are a couple of early preview shots of the scenery, these are taken around Trøndheim and Bergen:

Combined with photoscenery, although it's autogen-based, the outlines of towns/villages and woodland are fairly accurate:

The scenery works well without photoscenery, as shown in these shots below:

There is no decent photoscenery for Norway as far as I know. I generated a few tiles myself, but the default textures actually look better in some areas because of severe discolouration

Well, all I can say: Orbx Norway was in trouble against the UHD Mesh, with the addition of Norway Pro, they simply are out of the competition. Well they have bridges and a lot of flying buildings.
