Anybody headed to flight school in the fall?

Just curious...I'll be attending a community college in the Allentown area of Pennsylvania that offers an associates degree. Then I'll head somewhere else for hopefully only 2 years and earn my bachelor's degree with aspirations of flying for an airline someday.Anybody else begin their journey this fall??Tim

Good for u mate :)Im just curious....why dont you just do a bachelors degree *now*? Just dive straight into the Bsc or BA and be done with it!And a word of advice...try & specialize in something besides aviation. Pilots who are laid off due to downsizing or medical reasons rarely have a good fallback & when you look for non-aviation jobs they dont care that you can land an A330 in a stiff crosswind at night in heavy rain with all the displays failed.So get like an MCSE on the side or something....U gotta have a backup :)

Well, the reason for the community college route was the price tag. With both years of the assosciates degree, core curriculum classes, and all flight training, it comes to around 25,000. I'll leave the 2 years with somewhere around 300 hours, and with a CFI certificate and all the ratings I need. We looked at Embry-Riddle but the cost of it, and it's extreme focus on only aviation kinda drove us away. So, my goal is to finish my associates degree, attend a 4 year school with enough credits of core curriculum to attend for only the final 2 years of a bachelor's degree, while gaining flying time as working as an instructor on the side. I was planning on majoring in something non-aviation related, but haven't decided what yet. But hopefully, I'll ened up after 4 years in pretty good shape for a regional airline...Tim

Ahh yes...price. Sorry...ignorant me. Yea it does cost quite a packet to train these days. But it looks like you got it all planned out so thats great.FS9 can help you a LOT - specially when it comes to VOR, ADF, ILS etc. Its not pro-training software but its a great supplement to your instructor, text-books & real-life flying.As for regional flying...Im sure you will end up in a jet instead of a turboprop. Just look at all those RJs floating around!!! :)

Hello all,Have a nephew who will graduate this fall from Embry, and have almost talked my 18 year old daughter into going. 'the boyfriend' was a major setback but he's sort of put himself out of the picture and she's been accepted.Perhaps there will be more pilots in this family afterall.BestClay

I'm going to New Mexico State University this fall, getting my degree in electrical engineering. I have planned all my life to fly, but $$$ just seems to be the limiting factor...i am not sure I can do it. However, I won't stop trying :-hah

I'm looking into majoring in Computer Engineering (if I want to be a pilot), or Air Traffic Management. I'm at a dead tie at which to choose right now, but I still have about a year or more to make my decision. Also, I would recommend not going to Embry Riddle, because: cost ($90,000+ for CAPT program), and what will you do with a DC-9 type rating, when you want to apply to a regional???!!! (No offense to anyone has been enrolled in that program either, I just think for the cost of the training, you should be able to get more out of it.) To get back on topic here, I'm starting my PPL training in May of '05. :-)
