P3D v3 causing NVidia driver to crash

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Yesterday I purchased P3D v3, after few moments I my nvidia driver stopped to work and recovered, but P3D became a black screen.

What is weird, is that with 2.5 I had this, but very random and I never had it with any other game.

What can make this happen?

Somehow it created 2 topics, how can I delete the other?

If your video card is factory-overclocked (e.g. "superclocked" versions from eVGA), sometimes the overclock can become unstable over time.  You can use a utility like nVidia Inspector or eVGA Precision to downclock the GPU back closer to the nVidia design specs.

Also, sometimes upgrading drivers leaves remnants of old drivers in the system that can affect stability.  Any time I start having video system issues, I uninstall the driver, boot to safe mode, run a driver uninstaller utility while in safe mode to get rid of any lingering components, then reboot and reinstall the driver.

Last, there can be assorted hardware issues that cause this, too.  GPU overheating, insufficient voltage from a weak/failing power supply, an improperly seated GPU or power cable connection etc etc.

Very unusual, suggesting either something physically going wrong - overheating or inadequate power supply spring to mind.

But I would start with a clean, fresh install of the latest drivers for the card. Use DDU to properly clean the drivers from your system before reinstalling.

http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

Finally, for best results you should provide full system details. Who knows whether the crash is actually caused by the driver, or something else that is crashing the driver ?

Please show the crash message.

We need system details in full, also details of any addons you may have tried to install so far. For example, FSUIPC needs a v3-specific version that is NOT the same as that for 2.5 but we don't know if you have this installed or not.

Without this information all you can get are random suggestions.

Make sure nvidia power management mode is set to Maximum perf and not adaptative.

Yeah not sure whats causing it. I'm having a few random black sceen display driver crashes too, only when I have the scenery completely maxed out, and ONLY with P3D.

I'm sure we are not alone and they are working on the issue.

You might want to check the temperature of the video card? At idle and under FSx.

As Bob is saying, some cards are factory overclocked, you add up more than 1 screen and the video card is "working harder" meaning produces more heat.

The quick solution in that case is to revise the factory fan profile with the manufacturer utility.

My card is an Asus GTX 680 DirectCU II Top, yes it is overclocked, but…

I can use it with The Witcher 3, Batman Arkham Knight, Project Cars, iRacing, etc with full settings @ ~60fps 1080p, can spend hours playing and no problems at all.

Open P3D v3, taxi to runway… driver crashes.

So it's P3D v3 fault, right?

If it is factory overclocked, you should be okay.  I have the EVGA Super-Overclocked GTX 780 and have never had a problem with it.  But, if you try to change any of the "factory overclocked" settings, you could see problems. Once it is overclocked, there is no reason to change the settings.  If you changed the settings and did the overclock instead of ASUS, then this is most likely your problem.  Have you gone back to the default settings?  You can run a hardcore benchmark program to see if your overclock is working well and see no problems reported by your benchmark program.  Then, when running FSX or P3D, your sim will crash, screens go dark, and you will see anomalies.  Actually, I think FSX and/or P3D should be the benchmark programs for all CPU's and GPU's!!

Yes, you can run other games across the world without any problems and still have a CTD in FSX/P3D.  The current games around the Internet are programmed for you to turn up the settings to the max.  FSX/P3D are not as they are based on older technology and the programming is not the same.  One of these days we will get a new simulator which was programmed for max settings.  Right now you have to be very careful with your settings, both in the P3D.cfg and your display driver.  Set them too high and you will not have any enjoyment of the product.  Maybe in 2025.  Does Batman, Witcher 3, Project Cars, etc., etc., have addon commercial scenery and other addons to enhance the product?  I think they have missions and stuff but not commercial addons like FSX/P3D.  So that's a problem too for P3D users.

Any tweaks you might have employed in your P3D.cfg could be causing your problem too.  The AffinityMask and/or Bufferpool tweaks can bring P3D to its knees begging for more resources.

Did you know that when you installed P3D and ran the program for the first time, the program set up default settings that work the best for your computer system to include your video card?  So, that's what LM programmers said were the best settings for your system.  Sure you can crank them up a little but too high and you will have problems and you will not enjoy the product.  Throw in some resource intensive addons like some payware aircraft or scenery, and you will see even more problems running P3D.  There are some computer experts who are able to overclock their computer system and crank their P3D settings to the highest.  Most are not successful after a few hours of flying.  Eventually, these systems will crash too.

If you installed any addons via an official installer or you did it yourself (maybe with that Estonian Tool)?  Even if the installer was provided officially by a commercial developer does it mean the product will work well in P3D.  We are constantly seeing developers of addons upgrading their products or issuing updates to fix bugs.  Of course, it is you and I who are the "beta testers" and the ones who find the bugs.  You should not blame LM and P3D.  P3D works great by itself.  Then you install addons....

AVSIM has a CTD Guide that might help you diagnose your issue.  If you know the driver that was at fault, we have included some probable or known fixes to those problems.  Link to the guide is in my signature.

Thanks Jim!

I was using P3D v3 with the default settings, right after I installed, no add-ons at all.

Now I have ORBX, FSDT, PMDGs, ASN, REX, FSUIPC

I believe there's an add-on saving my machine, I did the same test and no crash at all, then I turned everything to max, dropped my FPS around 25-40, but CPU temp about 60ºC, i7 3770k @ 4.7 with Corsair H110i GTX and GPU about same temp, with stock overclock (I don't overclock it myself).

Conclusion, P3D v3 stock = crash driver

P3D v3 + lot of add-on = heaven haha

It's just weird, but it's what happened here.

Yes, it happens to some.  If there were crashes from everyone who installed P3Dv3, then LM would have never released their product.  There was a lot of beta testing.  Crashes are frustrating so you have to figure out why it is just happening on your system and not on other systems.  Hopefully you can find it.  If not, remember you can get a refund within 60 days from LM and move on to something else.  If you need further help, let me know.
