Jagged lines, shimmering, cockpit looks really bad!

Featured Replies

Hi guys!

I need some help, I have a problem with jagged lines, shimmering, no AA, I don’t even know how to call it!
The problem is with the textures on my cockpit, the lines looks jagged, like there is no AA or is not working ok, on the outside I only notice it on some reflections on the water, but the cockpit, I cannot even read the text on the radios!

I searched a lot and tried million setups and tips, but I couldn’t figure this out.

This is how my cockpit looks

I’m running FSX SE on Win 8.1, my hard is Intel I5 with GTX 970, I’m using a 40 inches TV connected with HDMI (maybe this has something to do with it?)

I have the latest driver installed from nvidia and tried with and without NI, no matters if I set everything to low or high, I still see it like that.

Here are 2 full resolution screenshots:

Both screenshots are full screen, if you zoom in you could see the difference between the text on the icons and the text on the VSI or altimiter!

Any advice from you would be really useful, I don’t know what else can I try :(

Thanks a lot for your time and your help guys!

The AVSIM FSX Config Guide will eliminate 99.9% of all jagged lines/shimmering.  Any tweaks will most likely cause shimmering.  See link to guide in my signature and look at the settings at the end.

Looking at the text on the "Icons" (meaning the desktop icons) and the text on on the VSI or altimeter, leads me to

ask does your FSX full screen resolution match your Windows resolution?

Hi guys! I will try to follow the instructions on the guides and get back to you.

As for my resolution I'm running both Windows and the game at 1920x1080.

Also, zoom your view in towards the panel. It helps, believe me.

Yes that's true, If I zoom in the lines become super clear.

Do you think it's a zoom problem? I'm using 0.30 on that view.

Going forward with EZdock also work, as closest I get to the panel, the clearer I see.

Thank you :)

I don't think its a zoom problem as such. Looking at the picture in your opening post, I just think you are too far away from the panel. Taking the A2A Cherokee as an example, I found that once zoomed in to the point that the shimmering was acceptable, I was about as close to the panel as I would be in real life, as these cockpits are not that spacious.

Also, being closer to the instruments means that TrackIR is more practical, as you can see read the instruments with a quick glance round, instead of having to move your face towards the screen, or zoom in further with the keyboard. It's a lot nicer.

I see that you are using FSX.SE. I can't remember whether FSX has a mipmap option in the graphics settings, but I've found that in P3Dv3, enabling mipmaps is very beneficial.

Remember also that zoom determines how far away objects outside the cockpit look. If you set zoom to 0.30 it's a little like looking down the wrong end of a telescope as far as scenery goes and it starts to distort the view as you pan around or turn. Some people like to use the zoom level to see more of the panel and if you're happy with that, go for it. However, it's more realistic to use a zoom setting that doesn't distort the scenery and then move your eye point backwards/forwards until the instrument panel looks correct. For a good (if slightly long-winded) explanation of zoom and wide view aspect, take a look at "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjbCFNSofpk".

H guys.

Thanks for your answers. I tried to apply the NI settings as described on the guide, but I don't see any effect on the game. Is like the game is ignoring the NI. I added the .exe to the profile, run as administrator, etc.

Inspector should work just fine with Steam right? Windows 8.1 could be a problem?

Thank you!

All of my cockpits had horrible shimmering until I cleared the shader cache. That cleared them up. App/local roaming/microsoft/fsx/shader.

One last tip that I forgot - make sure wideview is enabled. It means you can see more of the panel when zoomed in. It helps.

I tried it with wideview enabled and using 1.0 zoom as recommended on the zoom video, it gets a bit better.

The problem is still there but it's less noticeable, anyway I think something is not working ok with my AA.

I think I will try a clean install, maybe is something related to my drivers or my os? Already tried everything on the post so far.

Thank you!!
