Using PMDG 777 ILS

Recommended Posts

It brings up a page where you can input freq/course (xxx.xx/xxx) for both VOR's and ILS.

Hi,  I am trying to figure out how to set up a basic ILS for the PMDG 777.

What type of flight are you trying to do? Between different airports or circuits around one particular airport?

I do flights from one aiport to another with the FSX IFR flight planner.  I know it is not the real deal in the world of IFR flight, but it works for me just fine.    I don't use the FMC for navigation, but FSX ATC.  I recently started using the ILS for QW757 and Level-D 767 and is quite simple to use.  When I approach my destination airport,  ATC will tell which runway I will be landing.  I enter the runway frequency on the cockkpit panel (not the FMC) and thats it until I get near the ILS and press LOC and the plane does the rest in alligning with the runway.

You want the NAVRAD button. It's on the FMC just to the right of the MENU button and under the LEGS button. When you press it you enter a page that allows you to input values for the VOR's and ADF's as well as ILS (which will be the fourth option down on the left). If your on the ground it should say PARK. You input the ILS info in the scratch pad of the FMC in the following format  xxx.xx/yyy  where x is the frequency and y is the runway heading. Then hit the button next to ILS to send the info to the autopilot. Then your LOC and APP buttons/modes should work as usual. Good Luck.

Do you enter any data into the FMC such as origin and destination airports, fuel, ZFW, CI, assumed temperature, flap settings, etc.?

No.  I don't use the FMC for the PMDG 777 for anything except for the doors and fuel.  I don't use the FMC at all for anyting for the QW757 and Level-D 767.  Never needed to.

All I can tell you is the plane is being operated incorrectly. And so is the QW757 and the Level-D 767. None of these planes were intended to be flown in this manner.

You can, of course, fly as you wish - but it seems that you have paid a lot of money for some very accurate add-on aircraft, while missing out on about 80% of their capabilities. Even the QW 757, which is the least complex of the aircraft you mentioned, really won't work correctly if you completely ignore the FMS. You're missing out on a lot.

With your style of flying, you probably would have been better served by downloading many of the very nice freeware 737 / 757 / 767 / 777 models available here at Avsim or other sites - aircraft which are designed to use the default basic FSX airliner cockpits, where you can fly using heading select and altitude hold, and navigate VOR to VOR. The default cockpits don't have, or need an FMS.

Even though you seem to be having a hard time understanding how an FMS works, I urge you to keep working through the various tutorials. All Boeing FMS systems work very much alike, and once you master one, you pretty much can understand any of them.

Even better there are plenty of nice GA planes that have no FMC and you can fly ILS approaches by tuning the nav radios yourself. Or find a good quality 707/727 and you'll have a jet without an FMC and you'll have to handfly the ILS.

Dig up a 3-year old thread for such a comment... you are missing posting? 😁

There are times you have to put it in manually. Such as  airport KEGE, a real nice Orbx payware in Colorado way up there above 6,000 feet ,mountains all over the place and you have to pay attention .The Freq.is wrong you have to insert this    109.75/253 and stick it where it says ILS Park , not sure where that page is at the moment , don't have my sim open.     Louis

Nothing is wrong. PMDG create realistic systems that are to be flown like in the real world. This includes a bit of an open mind regarding costs and maybe subsriptions. Using PMDG and ORBX will need you to go for a navigraph or aerosoft subscription too. Then everything is fine. P3D with those addons is simply not an arcade anymore.

But Anyway, I don‘t see a point in resurrecting an old thread like this from someone who obviously was completely rejecting any helpful advice.

Actually you don’t need to do this. It improves realism but you can use a sim like the 777 without ever buying up to date nav data. I only started buying data after I joined a VA.

You can use your sim without any controllers... 😄 but then don‘t say it‘s behaving wrong... ^^
