Temp fix for NVI users in clouds

Recommended Posts

8xSGSS is way too much for even the best gfx cards on the market today, it will reduce your fps and cause stutters when clouds are present.

Contrary to what many say, the MSAA setting in P3D does NOT have to be the same as your SGSS in NVI.

I've found a nice compromise for my GTX 970 4GB that performs nicely in any kind of weather and that is: 8xMSAA (in P3D) and 2xSGSS in NVI.

If you've got a similar card, give that a try.

And btw, the Anisotropic setting can easily be set at 16x. No reason to go lower as this is no stress for the gfx card.

Do you disable FXAA in P3D with these settings or leave it on?

FXAA off. If you are limiting your frames, you don't need Vsync or Triple Buffering either. I am reading a lot lately about adding and AffinityMask setting. I am trying out 85 for the moment. Seems to be working well. I have done some NGX hops with ASN and it all looks promising.

So the SGSS smooths out the loss of FXAA? Without FXAA the VC is more readable but the exterior is super jaggy.

Yes, unless you have a 4k monitor and can run at a higher resolution, then you don't need SGSS. However, like most of us, I am running a 1920X1080 monitor so I need that little bit of extra polish SSGS provides. Otherwise, things get jaggy.

I run 2xSGSS and everything still Shimmers like crazy, the AA in P3D is terrible wish they could do something about it. 4xSGSS kills my FPS in clouds unlike in FSX w/DX10

On several sites I have read that the amount of SGSS has to be the same as the amount of MSAA .

SGSS uses MSAA data as a base and therefore 8x MSAA with 4x SGSS is looking less good than 4x MSAA with 4x SGSS...

Quote from Overclock.net :

You must set the Sparse Grid Sample number to the exact same amount of multi-samples. In other words if you are using 4XSparse Gride you also MUST use 4xMSAA in the profile. Otherwise you will end up with a blurry mess.

You also are going to have to set the LOD bias so there is no blurring. You must change the LOD bias setting from clamp to allow. This is a general guideline on LOD bias settings.

2x MSAA + 2x SGSSAA: -0.500

4x MSAA + 4x SGSSAA: -1.000

8x MSAA + 8x SGSSAA: -1.500

Thanks Gerard, very helpful, I was always in doubt  about that LOD bias setting.

Well, it's obvious that you don't HAVE to match the ammount of MSAA and SGAA. Try mixing and matching these and you'll get different results both graphically and performance wise.

I just tried 2xMSAA and 4xSGAA and that also gave a tolerable compromise. GPU load was around 70% in heavy clouds so within bounds.

8xMSAA and 2xSGAA was again a little easier on the GPU load.

Yes, the mix and match is working better than when I had it matched. Something new to consider?

Is that the LOD in NI? In texture filtering there is Lod DX and OGL. Which one to use?

The 2x SGSS with ingame 8x MSAA (and FXAA off) works pretty well.  There are some jaggies on certain paint jobs I use but I do like it because FXAA creates a blurry scenery and makes glass hard to see.  A lot of my aircraft have GTN750 and that can be tough to read as well with it on.

FPS seems to drop a little but 2x SGSS isn't too bad, and I tested with lots of dense clouds.

Is this the proper settings?  All I changed was the behavior flag for AA and the SGSS entry

I agree, it is a reasonaby good compromise. I've tried it now with PMDG and Aerosoft Airbus products. So far so good. the cloud drop is not too bad either.

Yes Ryan, that's correct. The Behaviour Flags doesn't do anything though. Might just as well leave it at "none".

I've also tried the suggested LOD Bias (DX) settings and I can't see any visual changes so I leave that at default.
