I5-6600k or I7-4790k for FSX

Alaister, I've yet to build my Skylake PC, the components are still in boxes... but yes, it will run with the integrated graphics. But whether it will run with the frame rate and eye candy you regard as a minimum is another question.

Yes FSX is CPU biased, but the GPU is still important these days, given the higher res and AA we all favour. I've always found a graphics card upgrade to make a significant difference in terms of performance, not as much as a CPU but still significant.

I'm looking at putting my first system together in the new year, the Asus Z170-A looks perfect for what I had in mind. How good are the integrated graphics? As I probably won't be able to put in a GPU for a little while, since FSX isn't GPU bound (thinking of popping in a nice skylake i7)

Get a GPU. See the post above mine written by Martin for the explanation. If you're going to build yourself a decent computer, there is no reason not to get yourself a GPU. If money is a factor, get something on the low end to hold you over for a while.
