Building new PC, Paranoid about specs and performance.

This is my first post here.

 

Recently, my flight sim PC died on me. I have narrowed down the cause to the CPU, Motherboard and GPU, I will be taking the RAM and PSU in for testing soon after my own tests (Which i have already done.

 

Here is my goal:

 

I plan to run P3D v3 on this new rig while getting roughly +40 FPS and still have a nice looking sim.

 

I will be running the PMDG 777, Aerosoft A320 (And a330 whenever it gets released), Active Sky Next, FlyTampa Sydney, ORBX Australia, ORBX Ireland, PrecipitFX, REX Soft Clouds, and some more scenery.

 

Here are the specs that i currently have planned:

 

Intel Core i5 4690k Devils Canyon 3.5GHZ

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 4GB GDDR5

ASUS Sabertooth Z97

Crucial BX100 500GB SSD

Windows 10

 

I have heard stories about people having higher specs and getting horrid performance, i'm paranoid i'll be like them. 

 

So would this be good enough to run P3D with those addons and what should i have my settings set to to get the best performance and best look?

If I could make one suggestion, spring for the 970gtx at minimum. P3d v3 can make use of it. Overclock the 4690k and you should be just fine. Maybe closer to 30 fps, but a smooth 30 is better than a stuttering 40.

Impossible to answer that question absolutely. It depends of what you call nice looking, depends of the weather, depends where you are (large cities...) etc. 

Even an 980 Ti + 4790k can go to the single digits on FPS.

I do not have a 4k Monitor yet.  You could actually go up to 5K with the Titan X.

 

I'm running it with a 2560 x 1440 and it is sweet!

I have a 6700k at 4.6ghz and a gtx 980ti and couldn't be happier. If your budget will allow I would certainly go for a 6700k.

Indeed, i have that CPU with a gtx 970 and if i put some sliders to max i drop to a single digit in FPS on populated enviroments, i got my smoothness at 20/25 locked FPS, over that its like playing a photo frame game.

I would agree with those suggesting a GTX970 upgrade to you build. I bought one recently and it does a fantastic job, for the money spent, at handling all of the GPU tasks Prepar3D asks of it at a 1080p resolution. The GTX970 is a good deal for the performance you get for the price. If you want really good 4k performance, then a GTX980 is a better choice. The 980 will cost more.

 

Your CPU choise looks good. The numbers say the i5 4690K Devil's Canyon is a solid CPU that is marginally less powerful then the i7 4790K. Both appear to overclock similarly and with similar results. A few have been mentioning the Skylake CPUs, which are very good as well. I haven't yet seen any good benchmarks done with Prepar3D to make me choice an i5-4690K/i7-4790K over an i5-6600K/i7-6700K(skylake). The big change with the Skylake CPUs is the requirement for DDR4 RAM. This might be a good thing for Prepar3D. I just don't know if the expense is worth it right now.

 

 

I have an AMD FX8320 running at 4.6GHz with a GTX970. I broke inside last week and ordered an i7 4970K with a Z97 motherboard. The CPU choise was the hardest, but I wasn't sold on Skylake CPUs' performance over the i7-4790K in Prepar3D or FSX. I was also on a budget that wasn't ready for the investment intothe DDR4 RAM that is required for a Z170 motherboard. I figured that I'll get a Z97 motherboard and use my current RAM. When we see the fabled 64bit version of Prepar3D come out, I'll probably start looking at DDR4.
