Upgrade CPU or GPU

Hello,

 

It is christmas for me and my family said that I could use my giftcard for something for my computer. I know FSX:SE is very CPU dependent but my GPU is also not the best. I was wondering what I should upgrade for my computer. GPU or CPU?

 

Specs:

CPU: AMD Athlon X4 860K (Overclocked to 4.0 GHz)

GPU: EVGA GTX 960 ACX 2.0 2gb SuperSC (Overclocked)

You have a decent GPU - don 't want to start a war BUT I'd get an Intel CPU that you can clock to at least 4.4. A lot will depend on what your mobo will support.

 

For what you'd spend going from a 960 to a 970, 980, 980TI or Titan - you would get a good value with the results.

FSX loves Intel. It was Intel who collaborated with MS to design FSX's multithreading capabilities.

 

A better GPU will help FSX with shadow and cloud performance, as they are all handled by the shaders.

If you want to keep the MoBo FM2+, only swap CPU A10-7870k or A10-6800k.

The FX series is AM3+ need a new MoBo for that

Intel is the way to go for Flightsim , i have test FX CPU in fsx not sure of the A10 but they perform probaly as a FX 9590 if you OC to 5ghz

I have a asus Crossblade and a A10-6800k but not test it with FSX.

Looks like that X4 860 is about as good as it's going to get for single-core on AM2+. If you want more CPU performance, you're looking at a new motherboard as well. Might as well go Intel.
