The DNC list is pretty useless because the spammers (who by and large are using VOIP from offshore locations), completely ignore it. They simply call every single phone number is a given area code/prefix, using spoofed caller ID numbers to make it appear that the calls are coming from somewhere in the US.

 

The list only stops legitimate telemarketers.

Interesting message from Which? this afternoon. This is a UK consumer magazine widely respected for championing consumer rights...

 

The government has announced that companies will no longer be able to hide behind an 'unknown number'. They must display their phone number when making marketing calls.

 

Hooray! That will make it far easier to report them. Probably won't help with the Windows Support criminals but it's a start.

All fine, Ray, as long as people have Caller ID enabled handsets. On mobile phones, no problems AFAIK, but the old traditional BT handsets that do not display anything, it could be a stumbling block.

I've had caller display for years. Given its obvious benefits can't imagine why people wouldn't have it. New cordless handsets are cheap enough.
