Control stick noises in p3d v3.1

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I posted this on the p3d forum but I think I might get some help here as well. Hope copying the same content doesn't offense anyone.

I just bought the v3.1 and I liked most aspect of it. However the joystick problem alone is making the simulator very uncomfortable to fly with. Here is what I encountered:
The sim is reading "noises" from my yoke and even if I have my hands off the yoke, I can see the "virtual" yoke occasionally shake around its natural position. I tried to calibrate it with both the built in function and FSUIPC, and I can observe the slide jumps like -118, 0, -118, 0, 0, -118 and there's no way I can eliminate this. I tried the "eliminate control peak" function in FSUIPC and it doesn't work either.
Also it happens when I turn the yoke left to bank the airplane, the yoke will actually go right first for a tiny bit and then go left, same happens with pitch axis.
I have never encountered such problem in p3d v2.5 or FSX, I don't see this noise in the Windows joystick align interface either so it doesn't seem like a hardware problem to me. I'm wondering if someone could point some direction for me to try fix this? (I tried playing around with sensitivity and null range but that won't fix the problem.)
Another problem which is minor but maybe related to this, that is when I use mouse look (space+mouse), I can't go 360 degrees but rather something close to 270 which means I can only go from 45-315 and can't reach the nose view of the airplane.

Thanks in advance for any help!

You may wish to have a look in the FSUIPC documentation. There is a user and advanced user guide. Check the calibration sections and also search for noise, dead zone and inverted. I don't have those problems so I can't be specific.

You may wish to open joy.cpl snd check the properties of your yoke. Check to see if there is noise in the yoke. You can enlarge the dead zone to dampen the effect. This can also be done in FSUIPC. However, joy.cpl is visual.

If no soution, go to the FSUIPC forum and ask for help. If Peter Dowson doesn't have a solution, it probably doesn't exist.

Good luck.

Sounds to me like you have a defective yoke.

Yes, it's a defective yoke (noisy potentiometer(s)). You might be able to filter it out some with FSUIPC like gfd mentioned above, but basically you're better off buying a new one.
