Help with scenery order (OSM, Norway/Denmark Pro, Ortho4XP etc)

Recommended Posts

So yes, new to X-Plane and all the information is a bit to much to take in tbh. I have downloaded hundreds of GB with scenery but I can't seem to get them to work together properly. Recently I have downloaded OSM Europe, but right now I have two folders of them in my "custom scenery" which I'm not quite sure what each of them is meant for.

First of all - for those of you having OSM Denmark Pro, is this how it is suppose to look like? I don't think so.

Secondly, I tried downloaded OSM Europe scenery along with the Innsbruck tile on 1500MB, but I don't its supposed to look like this either. Missing autogen, trees everywhere etc.

All in all - I am VERY confused with all the UHD/HD mesh scenery, W2XP, OSM, PhotoXP, OpenSceneryX etc. However, the PINNED post in this forum helps a bit. Scenery order underneath:

Sceneries like norway pro or denmark pro have to be above the photo sceneries and such solutions like Urban Maxx.

Your order in the wrong order, try this:

Also you have several sceneries that are redundant:
- w2xp_europe and w2xp_europe_osm-only: they cover both the same
- any w2xp sceneries and treelines and farms sceneries : w2xp has those treelines and farms included.

- in my opinion, get rid of Urban Maxx, especially with the tony's pro series they give an ugly effect.

You can tell x-plane not to load sceneries by adding _DISABLED, as I did above.

It is great for testing.

If you want to remove them definitely, just delete the complete scenery folder from your custom sceneries folder.

This will remove the entry from the ini file as well.

Adding a new scenery, will add it always to the top of the ini file, so it is better to put _DISABLED for testing, otherwise you will continue sorting.

My ini file has around 300 entries now, and is still growing.

From a readme(W2XP I think);

  - own airports (e.g. 'YSSY Sydney')
  - original XP10 airports (e.g. 'Aerosoft - LPFR Faro')
  - regional sceneries (e.g. Landmarks Germany)
  - OSM sceneries (e.g. THIS scenery)
  - addons (e.g. UrbanMaxxExtreme)
  - libraries (e.g. OpenSceneryX)
  - photorealistic sceneries (e.g. from simHeaven.com)
  - HD mesh files

I'll post mine, for comparison;

The above all look like the default scenery to me with UrbanMaxx

Here are some before/after shots of Norway Pro vs the default scenery so you can see what at least Norway should look like:

Default

Norway Pro

after1.jpg

Default

before2.jpg

Norway Pro

after2.jpg

Default

before3.jpg

Norway Pro

The above shots also include a new mesh I'm working on (Improved coastlines, water and land class), but the changes are very subtle that you'd have to look closely at the coastlines to see them. You'd see a big difference if you used the OSM, or Pro sceneries with photoimagery as everything would line up with the textures below. IMO, without photoscenery it's pretty ugly unless you fly in mountainous areas

However, at closer range, the differences should be apparent

I recommend you have a read of this

Bionor - you have both the Norway and Denmark scenery above several libraries, not like jh71 suggested to me. Why?

With jh71's suggestion of scenery order I ended up with this result, sitting on RWY 04R Kastrup EKCH. Still, I don't think its supposed to look like this so I must be doing something wrong, missing some libraries, faulty downloads etc.

EDIT: Well putting them above libraries didn't help either. Same result.

Yes, that's Denmark Pro, although it looks like you have all your settings turned down as most of the roads and buildings are missing.

This also highlights one of my peeves about XP, the default textures in rural/flat areas are really ugly, which is why most people either use photoimagery or fly very high above the clouds  :P .I've tried to create matching meshes but the amount of triangles needed to make the mesh match the objects above makes the scenery unflyable.

With photoimagery the results can be very realistic:

alabeo_r66_7.jpeg

Luckily it's possible to create or download decent photoimagery for almost anywhere in Europe or the US.

Ok, now I'm following. Well, I currently run relatively high settings but I'll try even higher then!

Depending on how powerfull your graphic card is, I would suggest following settings:
- roads on extreme (showing all roads). This was recommended by Ben Sputnick at one point, to get the most out of the scenery.

- objects: I fly usually with the setting megatons. Same for trees, the more you can draw, the better.

- world detail distance is at medium or less

(my experience: higher means x-plane puts more buildings farther away, and depending on your object settings, there will be less detail close by.

Thus I am keeping distance to medium to draw more objects close by.)

- turn water reflections completely off, or at low. You will win some frames. Medium or default settings have serious impact on my GTX 650Ti. Yes, I am considering an upgrade to a 970.

- the shadow setting is another frame eater. I have this at global (low). I found visually there is not much difference, so I don't bother.

- do not turn texture resolution too high, or you will run out of RAM/VRAM sooner and get a slideshow. Mine are at very high. Use compression.

- clouds have serious impact, so be cautious with this. In the weather panel, you can always reduce the visibility distance, to get more frames.

- I have HDR on, it has also negative impact, but I can not without anymore.

I found that default buildings are more dependent on the CPU, but Tony's buildings are GPU dependent, so those settings can vary.

Have fun.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have an GTX 970 (MSI Gaming edition), which is quite powerful but yes, when I add clouds the FPS drops quite drastically.
