A normal checklist from a real airline?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys!

Im wondering: Why is that difficult to get real documentation from real operators? I'm trying to find a normal checklist for the 737. Sure, i find lots of them, but all made by someone. Most of them have missing items, or use a random flow, others are excessively verbose etc.

I want to use the real stuff. A checklist used by an airline: delta, american, united, etc.

Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks

Because it is for internal use ONLY! There is a whole lot of security and legal issues that could occur if they were just released to the public, and there are some companies making a living from selling checklists and A/C manuals. For any given aircraft there is no single checklist or SOP. The aircraft factory have a set of minimum procedures that are to be followed, but most airlines/operators will add items to suit their operation.

I make my very own SOPA (Standard Operating Procedure Amplified) for each aircraft I fly. It's part of the learning process.

why don't you use Boeing's recommended SOPs ? good enough for me. Some airlines are lagging because they make their SOPs suitable for many variants of the 737, I am only concerned with the NG.

Hi,

I think that Boeing SOP are the best (for a not professional pilot at least)..short and coincise ..many airlines use those checklist indeed.

I remember my last experice into a fixed base B738 trainer (B738 FTD): Great experience ...screen= 6 30° wide projectors with a wonderful scenario...etc..the most difficult thing? They use Ryr checklist format..that is quite different from Boeing's one (i.e. ryr groups togheter taxing and takeoff checklist voices etc.) now I was trained to use Boeing ones...the most difficult part of the preflight was challenging with those "new" (for me) and "strange" checklists

I wonder if the OP is not differentiating checklists and flows.  Checklists as alluded tend to be quite short and concise...and while I've seen variations, tend to be very close to the Boeing SOP ones.  Flows however to set up the appropriate panels seem to be the most varied.  In particular, what is divided between PF and PNF can be quite different.  Look for user made checklists for the FS2Crew NGX Reboot.  The 3 different SOP's are based on real world flows and checklists (SWA, Virgin, RyanAir).  A good way to see where the major differences lay.  And if you have the NGX, consider buying the FS2Crew program.  It makes a much more immersive world.

Why is that difficult to get real documentation from real operators?

Because the people employed by real operators like to keep their jobs.  Every airline I have worked for expressly prohibits the distribution of company materials.

Joe is right. I have the official checklist from a well known Euro carrier from someone, they told me to keep it to myself.

Are the BEFORE TAKE OFF in here? Flaps and trim setting?

the remaining checklists (Before t/o, after t/o, descent, approach and landing) are on the control column for the airline checklist mwa05 pasted.

Just so everyone knows, the checklist pasted is effectively the normal checklists normally found in the qrh that came with the ngx. Just double side print those.

Sorry to but in slightly, when I went on 737 flight experience last year, one of the things I was quite keen to do, was a calling the checklist, and I explained this to the instructor. He said ok.

The only real checklist I could do for practical reasons was the 'Before take off'. Obviosly previous flows would be missed, because we are only doing take off and landing in a circuit. However to my dismay he wasn't calling what sounded like the normal check list. It wasn't based on something like you have posted, or simular to fs2crew. That is not to say it was totally wrong, maybe it was a longer more detailed checklist?

It was something like:

Fuel flow

auto brakes

centre fuel pumps

strobe lights

landing lights

transponder

brake

flaps

Is this wrong, or just a longer checklist or a different SOP?

Different checklist. Most airlines use the manufacturer (Boeing) formatted checklists. Most, not all. They're in the QRH you got with the ngx.

The thing to remember is that in normal operations, procedures are accomplished by scan flow and in general only safety-critical items are then checked when the checklist is read - you don't 'read and do', the idea is that everything in the checklist should already have been done by the time you call for it. Most of the longer 'checklists' that are produced for FS are actually more like tutorials/step-by-step procedure guides.

As has already been mentioned, airlines sometimes create their own checklists to fit their own SOPs and their own ways of working. However, having said that, at least one large airline that I'm aware of has been through a "Back to Boeing/Airbus" push recently to align themselves with the original Boeing procedures and checklists, as found in your PMDG documentation!

In your case, Julian, it's hard to comment but it could either have been a customised checklist (I'm not familiar with the 737 particularly, or the related FS2Crew procedures) -- all of those items (apart from fuel flow) are fairly standard before takeoff items -- or was the instructor simply verbalising the flows?
