[Updated 02/28/16] DFS/P3D/Flight/FSX Comparison Screenshots

Featured Replies

As I previously said, I thought the intent of the comparison was mainly about the general appearence of the simulators, the textures, etc., so not having default scenery installed, I just used the (freeware) one that I had installed. After all, I think the Piper Cub in MS Flight is an add-on as well?

I remember, when FSX or X-Plane 10 just came out and comparisons were made with FS9 or FSX, most people here were maintaning that "what counts is what the simulator can currently achieve, so it's legit to compare using the available add-ons."

However, fair enough, here's a screenshot with the default scenery:

LOWI has default 3D scenery, but I haven't it installed.

Everyone's welcome to do that!

This is XP10? You can see the lighting makes all the difference.

The tree shadows look fantastic. If 'next gen' flights sim can replicate this I am all in.

This is a philosophy I totally disagree with. I always compare a new flightsim to what I currently have, not what it was like 10 years ago. If I am going to move to a new platform, I want to know that it's either an advancement to what I currently have, or at least that it has the capability to bring it up to that level or exceed it. This is why I haven't adopted X-Plane 10, because it still lacks major functionality that FSX does much better. Namely  it's AI and ATC systems, as well as it's weather system. Why would I want something that is less than I currently have available to me. This is the same methodology I use anytime I move to a new FS version.

Yes you're right that philosophy is right for YOU. Thats not necesserily right for me or anybody else. That's what makes it an unfair comparison. However you are right to bring up the question of comparing what you have with any new sim, as will be the challenge for all of us. As I've stated before this is all a moot point as Flight School is still in development and some new graphical features still haven't been exposed.

None of the today simulators depects a sunny day as it should be , even in the outerra shots.

I really tried to achieve that with Xplane , but when you raise the GAMMA settings colors tends to be washed-out.

This is how it should look like:

Although it's GTA V and not a simulator , but it's an example of how lightning should be.

The good news are , at least n Xplane's part , I recall the developers at flightsimcon and also at their dev blog talking about taking the lighning model to another level just like modern games (GTA V was mentioned as an example).

Agreed!

Oh man DFS sky colours look terrible! :(

Following the completion of long term discussions, Dovetail Games is pleased to announce we will be partnering with Orbx Simulation Systems in order to bring key aspects of their technology to Flight School and Flight Simulator, both scheduled for release this year.

Orbx Simulation Systems has dominated the flight simulation scenery space since CEO John Venema founded the company in 2006.

"We are thrilled to partner with Dovetail Games as they usher in a new era of 64-bit simulators built on robust technology that we have a decade of experience in developing for", says John Venema, CEO of Orbx Simulation Systems. "We've developed a solid working relationship with the Dovetail team and we're confident that our terrain will look absolutely stunning in their enhanced 3D engine and provide a level of immersion unlike anything experienced before. We look forward to a long a productive partnership."

“We are incredibly excited about working with Orbx on Flight School and Dovetail Games Flight Simulator”, says Stephen Hood, Creative Director at Dovetail games. “Orbx represents the pinnacle of what can be achieved in terms of in-game scenery, so collaborating with them on these projects was the obvious choice for us. We are deeply committed to partnering with both new and existing developers and content creators moving forwards to create the best possible combination of technologies to power our simulators – this is only the beginning”

Can't say the LOD radius was very impressive, nor the default clouds. But still, I'm happy that a 64-bit sim is under its way.

Lol, when I mentioned this as a possibility a few months ago, I got handed my head. Of course, it seems I was completely wrong about them using Flight.

I don't know.. I mean, yes, it's nice to have updated textures. But it's still nothing new, in fact it's likely they will be textures ported over from a product we already got used to in FSX, FSX-SE e Prepar3d too.

I like the reflections of the plane, but that "electric blue" on the  horizon is a punch on my eyes. And i know it's work on progress still, but yeah.. you got my feeling.

Seen it all before !

Very familiar screenshots !! - either than the 'creative' blue !!

People are bound to be a little short sighted about this announcement and say its nothing new.

But for the first time ever, the entire world now becomes usable and flyable with convincing scenery. No more having to wait 2 years after release for the default sim to get third party texturing to make it look at least half real.

Orbx is the best there is for this kind of partnership and to get that as default, right off the bat , globally, is pretty amazing. Think about that with new lighting plus 64 bit etc. A great start by any standards

Yeah...... I see some pluses.... but this is essentially going to seem to many like the long dreamed for 'fixed' FSX that people have wanted for years. Fixing FSX is a good thing, and I will likely buy and toy with it.

But I'm really really really tired of FSX, and yet another modification of it........... leaves me feeling ambivalent.

I think this will succeed. But my eyes will still be on the horizon for something truly new.

I am saying it's nothing new because it is nothing new. It's not about being short sighted.
Sure, it's nice to have it but it's nothing we didn't have before.

As for the new lighting, it's nothing we haven't seen in Prepar3d so far, is it? I am more than happy to be proven wrong, but that is not happening yet.

The atmosferic scattering IS something new and i am waiting for it, but they need to fix the colour palette or whatever is making that blue so high in contrast because i have never seen such colours anywhere, and you won't see it like that in other games that support atmosferic scattering (xplane, Outerra, DCS) for a reason.

Martin some time ago said they are focused on making the best simulator they can. I do hope however this doesn't mean just fixing things we saw in FSX or implementing addons we already had. I am confident they can do more than that, but the fear is still there and likely won't go away.

I wonder what would the cost be of this new sim? 50 Euros/USD? Considering FTX Global, when i got it, was 99USD.

It's a Steam game and retail, so there's no chance it's more then $60 or so.

Orbx is not expecting to get $99 per copy sold. They will make their money on bulk sales via the partnership.

They will also make the most money from expanding their customer base to sell regions and airports too, which I'm sure they'll keep churning out.
