Flickering, Flashing, Crazy Texture Corruption..

Recommended Posts

I have been working through getting FSX to run well on my new system:

  • ASUS Maximus VIII Extreme mb
  • i7 6700k (OC'ed to 4.6ghz)
  • GTX980 4gb video card
  • 64gb memory(yea, I know.. overkill)
  • Triple-Monitor(5760x1080) with a 4th touchscreen

I am using the FSX CD + Acceleration Pack version.  And I am running it as Dx 10 using Steve's DX10 Fixer.  I have gone through Steve's 'How To' guide and set all the settings in my fsx.cfg.  My gpu is maxed out at 99% most of the time, and I have my Affinity set to 254(1111 1110) and it seems to be using all cores except 0(Which is for Windows).  So, that seems like it should be all ok, right?

This seems to happen most when the view is of a long distance away.  In the cockpit it doesn't happen too much.  It happens more outside, and often the blue background sky goes black.

I was thinking this might be because my graphics card was getting maxed out?  So, I turned down the AA in NVI and also set Limited the Framerate to 30(aka 31 in fsx.cfg).  None of this helped.  So, now I was wondering if maybe I need to change my FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.15  to something different.  But I'm kind of shooting blind here.  I don't really know..

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

The graphic corruption does not show up when I do a screen print.  So, I had to take pics with my phone:

Just a thought your video card may be going south - put it thru a stress test - software from web and see if it still happens if it does theres your answer - if not then something else I would start there first

Ok, I just did a 30 minute Stress Test with MSI Kombustor and had no errors with a max temp of 56c.  And my GPU is 'not' overclocked.

Well thats a relief - have to think about it as I am not sure - do you have other pc games is it doing it whit them - have you deleted your fsx.cfg file and let it rebuild

Looks like a texture issue - what have you installed lately

================================================

Also found this and worked

This is what worked for me.

1) Update your C++ Libraries install from here (be sure and choose the right file for your operating systems language - ENU (vcredist_x64.exe), if your using the 64 bit english version).

2) Add this line to your fsx.cfg file under GRAPHICS

[GRAPHICS]

HIGHMEMFIX=1

I am told ...

"The HIGHMEMFIX=1 you see above, fixes a bug in the FSX engine on how it handles texture addressing modes (Wrap,Clamp) and initial render states on single pass shaders, it will completely prevent textures, buildings and entire cockpits from dissapearing! this 'bug' is triggered when there is a high video memory usage situation." - ******* Altuve, April 2010

I have also found that you will probably have to re-install the C++ library update each time you install other software that installs a 2005 C++ Library.

You may still get the bug occasionally. Rebooting the computer resolves this for me.

Does this happen with any other programs besides FSX?

With MSI Afterburner, check the box that says bus usage and see what it reports in the OSD. Last time I had stuff like this happen was due to my PCIe bus being saturated.

No, not with any other games.  Only FSX.

But your suggestion to rebuild the fsx.cfg file gave me an idea to test my original fsx.cfg file.  I set it to use Dx10 and it has none of the other tweaks at all.  And it does not appear to have the texture corruptions and flashing.  So that gives me a place to start figuring this out.  At least it doesn't appear to be any graphics driver issues or C++ issues at this point.

Well not yet.  I need to compare my current fsx.cfg to this 'original' one that is working.  See if any of the Steve's DX10 tweaks are the cause...

I had a very similar graphic glitching issue recently when I installed a new video card. After a few restarts of FSX and scenery loads, it fixed itself.

I'm guessing there was some sort of corruption in the cache files stored for FSX and they eventually got over written and replaced with the visual anomalies then gotten rid of.

This happened to me today. After about 15 seconds, it cleared up by itself after I closed the 2nd viewport. Leading me to believe my system is over taxed causing the glitches.

I've seen odd colored spikes when my computer is overloaded.  For me it usually happens after a few hours of having Firefox open, displaying Google satellite maps of an airport, a few picture files are open, might have a PDF of an airport chart or other information open, ADE is open and I am modifying an airport.  I go to FSX to test my airport mods and boom!  Spikes everywhere, sometimes a screen that is a solid color.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

I've seen those anomalies with SweetFX or the ENBSeries installed.
