Aircraft and Scenery stored outside of P3D31 root folder

Recommended Posts

Guest JustanotherPilot

With the release of V3 developers were encouraged to install addons outside of the main Prepar3D V3 folder, this sounds like a good idea by eradicating the tedious task of reinstalling addons in the event of an update or user reinstall particularly scenery and aircraft. I have started installing scenery in it's own folder on another drive and have to say it works well, especially for saving on disk space in the main prepar3D v3 folder(good for us that have a smaller SSD). I recently purchase the RealAir Lancair Legacy and the installer did, in fact, install onto my C drive under Realair, separate from my E drive Prepar3D. I thought it might be a good idea to move some of my 3rd party smaller aircraft (Carenado etc) using this method but I can't find any easy reference that points the aircraft(Realair) to the correct Prepar3D folder so that I can utilize it for my moved aircraft. Given this, the installer must reference it through the registry entry.

Does anyone know if this is the case, if not, how do you move your aircraft to another folder outside of Prepar3D v3 and reference them to this folder.

Carenado airplanes should work in outside folders, but what is with PMDG or Aerosoft Airbus?

Didn't poppet (Elaine) post a guide about how to do this? Even if the aircraft's installer puts the files in the P3D main folder, one can just move them and reference them in the various cfg files (simobjects, effects, etc.) depending on how much one wants to move

I Believe that there is even a command line that will do the installing for you and add the files to the proper area In sim objects.Cfg ...

...something like:

Prepar3d CreateObject EntryNum = AddNum,type = Scenery,Title = addinScenery,path =J:\P3dAddOnStuff\addinScenery,required = True,Active = TRUE

...I tried it once....and I THINK I was impressed...but it wuz so new to my crumbling,crepetatious,cerebellum...

...that ISezToMaSef,="NuuuUnnnnnhhhh....too newfangledComplicatedHardToRemember"

...even though I also seem to remember that the convention has been around for more than several MAJOR updates...

...nope, I'm done...... I ain't gonna learn another new freakin' thing...dammit(dam 1, Damn 2), ...makes MA brain bone hurt too much!!!

...Goin' back to PakMan!

See ya,

I could be though that PMDG or A2A have hardcoded some files so that they must sit in the simulator path folder

One problem is  the A2A automatic update and it might look for the A2A files to be located in a specific folder. Have you asked A2A about this on their official forum? I've had success with Aerosoft, Milviz and a whole host of freeware aircraft. And as has been stated, RealAir automatically installs outside the P3d main folder.

I can tell you one thing further on this, all the A2A fx files are stored in the P3d Effects folder. If you moved those, you need to reference them in effect.cfg. Everything else is located in subfolders under the specific aircraft folder, including textures, gauge and sound files. However, there is also an Prepar3d V3/A2A/Shared  folder and it has  a DLL so if you move the A2A folder, you should check your startup situation. That DLL i believe, is only used for certain A2A aircraft like the Cub, but I'm not sure about that. There are other items in Prepar3d/A2A that might be tripping you up.

... better to leave the aircrafts in the root folder then, and just to have the sceneries outside. I make a backup of the rootfolder and if something unexpected should happen, I can restore the simobjects, effects, sound, gauges etc. folder.
