KSAN taxi instructions prohibit take-off clearance from RW27

Recommended Posts

Hi,

The taxi instructions given by P2A do not position the A/C at the end of RW27, but rather at the point where the planes would normally touchdown on the runway, which is a good distance from where ATC actually positions planes for take-off. Because of the large buildings near the approach of RW27, the actual touchdown is a long ways down the runway. One image (top down view) shows a red line extending from the P2A graphic white line depicting the taxi graphic that reflects actual operations for airlines. I fly the PMDG 737 a lot.

The other image shows my A/C at the end of the runway waiting to be cleared for takeoff, but never receiving a clearance. However, when I taxied down to where P2A had originally instructed me to enter the runway, I did receive finally clearance to depart and I managed to takeoff - but I was pretty close to the end of the runway before rotating.

KSAN is an airport I frequently originate my flights from.

I dont know about now because I havent watched planes take off from san diego since I was a kid, but when I use to live there, the red line would have been correct.  We use to go watch aircraft take off all the time.  Actually if you look close, you can see pavement along the fence line just under the red line.  this is where we use to park.  We actually had a Boeing 727 run up engines in front of us right in that spot.. Thought we were a gonner..lol  Brings back some nice memories ..  and Yes, that garage was there and has been there ever since I can remember

Hi Larry,

I've lived in San Diego since '69 and flew a lot on business. I don't remember ever taking off from that spot. With planes today flying fully loaded, they need the full length to remain safe.

Glad Dave will soon make me safer!!!

Cheers,

Bill

Larry,

I misread your comment.......Where the red line ends is next to the fence where you stood many years ago. It is too bad security is so restrictive.....when I was a kid I used to hang out on summer days and there were hardly any restrictions!

I grew up in San Diego, and used to go there a lot! It was the parking lot for Solar Corp, but there were no gates or guards. I had a Radio Shack portable (analog) AM/Airband radio which I would use to listen to the tower.

Lots of great memories of watching 727s, DC-8s, 1st gen 737s, 707s, F27s etc from airlines that don't exist anymore. Western, National, Bonanza and of course, San Diego's own PSA.

Hi Folks,

Yep - lived/stationed in SD in the 80's/90's - flew on Convair 340's/440's as part of a defense contracting gig out of NAS North Island as well... KSAN - What a great airport... Initially - had the FlyTampa version - now I use the LatinVFR airport - which is quite good... One of my favorite approaches to fly in FS - I've used RC4 into there a bunch and always needed to jack up the MSA or ATC would fly me into the terrain on approach... When I flew out in real life - they always seemed to use the displaced threshold for the start of the run - which is perfectly legal - and - I would think it would be odd not to...

Note: Can't see attached images...

Regards,
Scott

Hi,

I grew up in Cheyenne WY, and as a kid back in the 1950's, used to ride my bicycle out to the local airport and spend long summer days at the Air National Guard hanger. My best friend and I  spent a lot of time walking around the tarmac and inside the hanger, looking at P-51's, and later, the F-80. We were allowed to go anywhere we wanted, and the only thing we were ever warned about, was not to climb on the A/C. Also, a lot of transient aircraft, including Navy planes would land there. There was a lot of activity at this base.

At the time, believe it or not, United Airlines housed a training center for flight attendants there. I remember, a few years later, some of the more socially mature HS classmates of mine used to date the "Stews," as they were called back then.

The highlight of one summer occurred when I was invited to sit in the command pilots seat of a B-29. They apparently had to adjust an engine......so I got to watch them run an engine start on the left wing, while sitting near the flight engineer.............I was pretty high for a week after that experience.

Can you imagine a 11 or 12 year old kid today being offered an opportunity to sit in a B-52? When I went back to my last class reunion a few years ago, you can no longer get into to the airport area where the WYO National Guard is now flying C-130's. Sadly, those "Good Old" days are gone forever.

Ah, what a memorable time in my young life..............

Bill
