Cleared Departure Altitude too Low & No Handoff to Center

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I had three problems with this flight from KSAN to KPHX (See the embedded file below).

1) Departure gave me an takeoff altitude clearance of 3,000 feet, which seems pretty low for an airliner.

2) I flew a long time at 3,000 feet and I had to request my cruising altitude, which was 27,000 feet

3) The last issue, sometime time after takeoff, there was no handoff to Center from departure. After that there was no further communication.

Except for the low clearance altitude, I'm probably not doing something correctly. There is no doubt I'm getting better at setting up a flight as I get more comfortable with the menus, but the ATC lingo is going to take some time.

Any suggestions?

Bill

Bill,

I agree, unless you had filed for some in pattern work before departure.  lol

I found the low departure clearance issue and it should be fixed in the update this week.

Looking at the transcript, it looks like you never did an initial call to Departure  something like "Southwest 1234 level at 9000".  Once you received clearance to FL270, the Step Climb was abandoned.

I'll take a look at this Tower/Departure transition to see how to improve it.  I think in this case, had you been given a reasonable first altitude, things would definitely have gone better.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks......

One more observation I should mention about the text data posted above, is that I was told to maintain 230 knots after passing LOWMA heading towards POGGI. The PMDG 737 I fly appears to be programmed to increase the airspeed to 250 knots after LOWMA. So I am assuming that once passing LOWMA it is ok to move up to the 250 knot speed restriction. In addition, as I recall even when I was above 10,000 feet, I was given the ATC warning not to exceed 230 knots......which surprised me.

You may want to check this out as well?

I will keep flying this route until I get the ATC process and hope to complete it successfully......there is a lot to learn about ATC protocol.

On a positive note, I sure do like your new interface. Because I run on a networked PC, and I can show P2A in full screen, having access to the approach plate is really a nice feature!

Thanks Bill.

And yes, the speed warnings seemed to come after they should have stopped.  I made a change to try and fix that and it will be in the update later this week too.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,

I'm running the same flight plan again today........and I have gotten farther then yesterday.......my question is:

When I'm either passed from Departure to Center. or fro, one Center to another Center, there does not appear to be what I would think an appropriate response in your pull down menu's in the Grmr menu?"

What should I be requesting or Reporting or saying?

Hi Dave

Three big issues jumped out at me on this flight;

1. Once I had achieved my cruise altitude of 27,000 feet, I was asked by Center to expedite climb to 27,000 several times as I recall. My TOD was different than P2A's.

2. When cleared to descend to 25,000 which was about 36 miles prior to PMDG's TOD, I complied. However, I was left at the altitude so long that there was no way I was going to land at RWY 07L at KPHX because I was way too high.

3. Had I been granted the proper descent, I should have been cleared to AMBRR and then to FOWLE for a straight in approach to RW 07. Unfortunately, P2A appeared to direct me all the way out to TUKEE, which was way out of the way. I terminated the flight at this point.

When I was flying ProATC  I ran into this same issue where there is a difference between the NavDataPro versus the Navigraph. It appears, at least from my simplistic view, that NavDataPro is more European centric, and Navigraph is more USA centered. By switching from NavDataPro to Navigraph, I was able to fly the ARLIN3 approach they way it was intended.

See the new text file below.

As a suggestion, you may want to fly this route to see for yourself how these two WW regions differ as to how they deal with SID's and STARS?

Thanks for the detail report.  We'll definitely test it out and see what's going on with it.

On the question of reporting in, under Report, there should be a phrase named Current Altitude, or another one named To Altitude.

It should yield "Southwest 1234 at FL 270."  , assuming you are level at that altitude.  The To Altitude one would have something like "Souhtwest 1234 climbing to FL 270".

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave,

I'm still having an issue with being stranded at a given altitude and being passed off from departure to center;

I was cleared to 8,000.............but left hanging there at 8K for a while. The eventually I was cleared to 15,000, but left hanging......after a long while I paused the sim and stopped flying. In addition, it seems I'm not being handed off from departure, to center #1, to the next center #2, etc., in a timely manner. This is the second flight I have taken since the you came out with version 2.0.0.2......experienced this on both flights.

I'm sure I'm not doing everything as quickly as I should, or even correctly. So I have some user interface suggestions I would like to propose:

1) The Com Freq dialog box when you update the standby frequency, appears in the upper right hand corner of the display. From a visual perspective, it may be handier if it appeared just above the com/nav freq display in the lower left hand corner. I run a full display on a network PC

2) A couple of things to speed up use of the "Gramer Help" tool. Set up a joystick or key stroke for the so we can quickly bring up the dialog box.

I feel really pressed for time to respond!!!

I'll be getting with you to get more detail.  It seemed to work for me on a test flight, but there could be  a lot of differences.

Dave

On my 3rd try today with P2A v2002 I had a (mostly) successful flight San Diego to Phoenix:

KSAN POGGI5 IPL BZA HOGGZ JUDTH HYDRR HYDRR1 KPHX Rwy 26L Cruise Alt FL330

While in contact with PHX Approach flying eastbound past the CHAVO waypoint I expected to receive vectors for the 180 degree turn westbound to join the 26L ILS, but hearing none I continued past the final STAR waypoint LEMOE, at which point the FMS' "next line" went to "vector". Still hearing nothing I dialed-in the 26L freq/course and initiated the turn myself, followed with LOC and APPR on the MCP, landing normally -- including switching to Tower when instructed and subsequently hearing a call from Tower "cleared to land ILS 26L, etc.

My question is, what became of a call by P2A giving me vectors to align with 26L's glide path? If pilot error, what should I have done instead, and when, to enable vectors to be given? (I was at the FMC assigned altitude and speed throughout.)

Maury,

Glad you made it.

Assuming you were flying the STAR arrival, you should have received a "Cleared for ILS approach to runway 26L" from Approach Control before they passed you over to tower.  That was your clearance to fly to the IAF.  Then when you contact tower, they should tell you to call when established on final.

If you want a vector, you can request vectors to the ILS something like "<CallSign> request vectors for ILS to Runway 26 Left" and you then should receive vectors direct to the IAF, bypassing any intervening waypoints. This would require a quick DirectTo on the FMS and then you could use a DirectTo on P2A to get it to show on the map.

The vectoring function is pretty rough right now, so I would suggest holding off before exercising it too much.  I'm hoping to smooth it out for the next update.

Thanks for the PIREP,

Dave
