Pushback question

Recommended Posts

It is only a small detail, nevertheless I am interested in an answer.

I select NGX Long and ask for a pushback which is no problem ( APU not running )

GSX :  when asking for a push back I am forced to start the APU,otherwise it will not work.

What is the reason of this minor discrepancy ?

Thank you

It would be because if you pushback, you disconnect from ground power and so, with the engines shutdown, you will need the APU to provide power while the plane pushes back.

Don't you need the APU to start at least one of the engines as well unless you're going to wheel out an air start cart with you.

You need high pressure air to start an engine. If the APU is not running, or you don't have the air start cart there to do it for you, then the engines won't have high pressure air to start them. If you have the APU going, then you can use the bleed air from it to start the engines while you're being pushed back. Nobody in their right mind is going to coordinate dragging an air start cart alongside the aircraft while it's being pushed back, though. In that case, you'd start one engine while at the gate, disconnect the air start cart, and then start the other after the push is complete using what's called a cross-bleed start.
