Questions from a newbie

Recommended Posts

I currently have all the UK GenX VFR photo Scenery from Horizon.

- How does TileProxy compare? Is it worth running instead of the above?

- What is the best LOD to use in TP for optimum balance between quality and performance?

- On a flight of say 1 hour, how much disk space is used up by downloaded texture files, given above settings?

- Does one typically delete downloaded files after completion of a flight?

- Does TP use different LOD files depending on the altitude of the aircraft?

Thanks for anyone's advice.

Stuart

First let me say you are hardly a "newbie" with 663 posts!  I have been flying FSX  with TileProxy (TP) for many years and don't invest much money in anything else, except UTX Europe and UTX USA which give you some nightlights that FSX/TP doesn't provide, plus a lot of other free addons.  I will attempt to answer some of your questions as follows:

- How does TileProxy compare? Is it worth running instead of the above? I don't know, I don't have those addons.  You will only get 2D photorealistic scenery with TP (up to 30cm./pixel) of most anywhere in the world that is cover with good LOD from Virtual Earth/Bing or Google Earth.  If they have poor imagery in a particular area, so will TP.  Flying 500' to 1000' AGL looks great with TP. Flying lower, scenery is 2D (flat) except for all of the addon scenery for addon 3D airport scenery, stock FSX airports, etc. (see example from Exeter England below).  If you are OK with this, then you don't have to buy anymore scenery packages (TP is free).

- What is the best LOD to use in TP for optimum balance between quality and performance?  The LOD depends on the capability of your PC CPU/RAM/Disks/SSD/Interconnection speed/etc.  Since TP doesn't autogen any buildings, the load isn't that great and you can get pretty good FPS with lower end PC's.  You just have to try it.  Actually, I use 60cm./pixel and get good photorealistic scenery most anyplace in Europe and USA in particular.

- On a flight of say 1 hour, how much disk space is used up by downloaded texture files, given above settings?  This depends on your LOD settings in TP (proxyuser.ini file) and how much Gb of disk space you have (which is very cheap today).  I usually do not delete any TP photorealistic files.  This way they do not have to be downloaded again in a future flight in the same area.  You can actually fly offline with no internet connection (and no performance hit from the high speed internet tile downloads) if you already have flown extensively over the same terrain before.  Also, I do not delete cache files from FSX on exit.  This allows me to restart FSX/TP much faster.

- Does one typically delete downloaded files after completion of a flight?  This question is answered above.

- Does TP use different LOD files depending on the altitude of the aircraft?  Yes, TP is constantly using different LOD tiles/files depending on altitude and distance.  This does require a fairly powerful PC or you get stutters.  You can read more about this in Christian Buchner's User Manual which is automatically installed with TP.

Here are links to a few more hints for installing and using TP are found here:

Ed Truthan's TP Guide - a must read.

TP Nov. 2008 Beta8 download (353Mb).  Yes TP is very old and not really supported anymore, but is still great scenery and free!!

John,

Many thanks for taking the time to give such a comprehensive reply to my questions.

I did mean 'newbie' as far as TP is concerned! You are right, as I have been flight simming since FS2002 days, but never tried TP.

Your picture of Exeter looks far sharper than my VFR photo Scenery, so I might give TP a trial. I was a little concerned as to the amount of disk space TP takes up.

I fly for the VA FlyUK so mostly flights of less than 2 hours within UK or to/from UK and Northern Europe.

One further question, which I think I know the answer too, is: if one is flying from say UK to Netherlands, is it possible to just have TP load textures just for the Netherlands? From what I have read, I think TP automatically starts loading textures from your departure point.

Thanks again for your comprehensive advice.

Stuart

BTW My system specs are as follows, do you think these will be OK for TP at 60cm resolution?:

CPU i5-4790k oc 4.0

GPU GTX 760TI Frozen

Various SSD (1 for windows10 and 1 for FSX:SE and 1 for VFR photo Scenery), plus 1TB HD in partitions.

Hi Stuart,

May be this guide translated in english with John will help you. http://tileproxy.eklablog.com/tileproxy-guide-english-version-a125263210

Concerning your last question, of course, TP will load the tiles from your departure point to your arrival point.

Rgds, Pat
