NDB/ ADF Dip

Hi all, 

 

Does anyone know if any of the Carenado models simulate ndb dip? 

 

I am doing my IR real world and would like to practice in the sim.

I doubt NDB errors have been modeled, you can set up a nearby thunderstorm and it will not have any effect on the bearing pointer.The sim is still useful for NDB navigation procedures and holding, or practice a time to station if you or so inclined.Kudos to you for wanting to practice the NDB procedures, as a sim instructor I was astounded by the lack of proficiency in basic IFR navigation exhibited by many light jet type rating applicants when we failed the GPS system Many had no previous experience using an RMI with a bearing pointer for a VOR let alone an NDB.

RealAir planes simulate ADF dip. Supposedly the RealityXP FLN gauges do too, but you need an airplane with VC that has some area where you can place 2D gauges. A lot of the older Carenado planes are that way (eg the C182Q and the BE33 are planes that I've put FLN gauges in). I don't know if the RXP gauges are supported anymore though, It's a really old product and I think the developer retired.

Dipping has more to due with the quality of avionics components and location of the antenna. I have flown aircraft with zero dip and I have flown one aircraft (a Bell 206B) that would dip up to 40 degrees. I think the old coffee can tuners are better then digital tuners because you can tune out an variance between the NDB equipment and the ADF station with the BFO. 

 

Since dipping is an installation issue and not a equipment issue, I am not sure it should be modeled in a simulator. I know that none of the FFS I teach in represents NDB dipping.

As Ken said, the dip error depends on the specific installation - where the ADF loop antenna is installed on the belly (whether it is mounted directly on the aircraft centerline, or offset to one side or the other), whether the aircraft used a separate sense antenna (usually a wire running from the vertical stabilizer to a insulator on top of the fuselage), or has the sense antenna integrated inside the loop antenna, and also the age of the ADF installation.

 

The dip (if present) also depends on the angle of bank, and how distant the NDB ground station is from the aircraft.

 

It would probably be difficult to program a sim ADF gauge to account for all the variables that can cause the error.
