Anyone come back to FSX after trying P3D?

Recommended Posts

I might go to P3D if the PMDG 744 is priced similarly to the fsx version. I could live without Reality XP support in P3D but am not going to spend 300 dollars just for the PMDG 737 and 777. And 100 for the Flight1 GTN package and I lose dme/vor distance readouts because those units dont have that feature like the 430 and 530 gps have.

That is keeping me from upgrading, it does look much better than fsx in the videos I see. Lots of streamers like Belynz have crashing and microstutter issues. Maybe it has something to do with scenery flushing to keep vas higher.

It would take an act of god for me to even think about going back to FSX/FSX-SE

Going back to FSX is like ditching Photoshop for MS Paint.  :Tounge:

Surprising answers here Guys

There's probably some selection bias involved.  Keep in mind that this is the FSX forum, so naturally it skews to FSX.  If the OP had posted in the P3D forum, I'm sure the votes would be running differently.  True, I'm an FSX recidivist, but I'm trying to be fair...

But I know it runs good for some people, but I can't justify getting a 970 or 980 Ti (or some in cases 2X Titans).

I understand where you're coming from. That being said, people have long complained about fsx not utilizing their expensive hardware. Now it will use everything one can throw at it. It's hardware demands are now equal to that of a current AAA title game. Your mileage may vary. I never thought I would live to see the day where my flight sim would consume nearly 90% of 6GB of vram. On a regular basis too.

I'm not at all throwing stones. We all come from different backgrounds and have different priorities. For me, it's quickly turning into everything I have desired in flight sim for years.

I've been following P3D but have not found any significant reason to go for it. My FSX boxed works just fine with the DX10 Fixer. Going back to the days of re-installing and tweaking instead of flying doesn't sound fun. Maybe if my HDD crashes I will reconsider.

What's wrong with MS Paint?  :fool:

The only reason I haven't ventured towards P3D is cost, just can't justify it. At this point my FSX is running great.

Whaaat? no back up?  :Shame On You:

I'm really surprised that people have so much better performance in FSX. How? Maybe it's a hardware thing but with my i7 4790k and GTX970 P3D v3 performs better than FSX ever did. It's more stable, less/no OOMs (none so far with v3 and I'm using addons which guaranteed an OOM in FSX), looks better,... the only thing that FSX was capable and P3D isn't is 1/2 refresh rate vsync. It showed in P3D v2 but now with v3.2 the visual smoothness is very similar to that I got in FSX with 1/2 vsync thing.

I was luke warm about P3D until I upgraded to a GTX 970 then I understood why from day 1 Lockheed have said get the best video card you can afford.

It would be interesting to see if those having issues with P3D have older GPU

My rig is OC 2700K ssd and GTX970 I run scenery slders at max (exluding water and ai), photo scenery and treescapes, Flying GA it is locked at 30fps. Use 3 Saitek panels and 4 usb boards to control switches and rotaries. FPS doesn't drop often, only Earth Siumulations Isle Of Man nails it but that is insane scenery especially when flying along the beach checking out the hotels!. Very heavy clouds DO affect the system. (I do not use NI and the AA settings are all nearly at max within P3D)  I also use GTN750 gps which is excellent.

Occasionally get a stutter but I think this is either autosave on FSUIPC or other non P3D cause.  Otherwise generally smooth.Certainly not an issue for me.

Do I use FSX (it is on my computer) No, I have simply moved on. Is it substantially better than FSX to justify the change over cost, IMHO not if you don't have a spanking GPU. Will I be in a hurry for P3D 64bit, er...no, too much payware scenery

I run P3D 3.2 with a GTX 670 (not a typo :) ) just fine. I have to use very modest scenery settings ("normal" for GA planes, "low" for planes like the Aerosoft A320), but even with those settings P3D looks better than FSX does on my system. And I don't have to do any tweaking, I just upgrade whenever there is a new 3.x version.

Been trying to get FSX to work for over 2 years, with help from dozens of people, including from Microsoft, but then I moved to P3D I've been flying every day, no way I would ever spend any more time on FSX, not now, not ever!

Cheers!

The best thing about FSX is that it doesn't change.

The best thing about P3D is that it does change.

I came back to FSX - couldn't stand micro stutters in P3D.

Tried almost everything, no luck - micro stutters are there, regardless of settings.

FSX on my machine is way more smoother - unfortunately...
