Steam "March Madness" sale

Recommended Posts

I don't have any steam products. Mainly because I don't like the idea of adding another running background program to my system. I am of course assuming that the steam program needs to be running whenever you use FSX:SE and the up coming DTG products. But knowing what happens when one assumes I'm going to ask for a confirmation here.

Can FSX:SE be run with the steam program completely shut down or better yet uninstalled?

Yes, FSX can be run without the Steam program being run. I do not know if you can uninstall Steam and keep FSX:SE, I suspect uninstalling Steam will take FSX with it.

There is no benefit to uninstalling Steam as you would lose the ability to apply upgrades, re-install FSX and use the Steam online pipeline.

Thanks Joe. Glad to know that it can at least be shut down completely while flying.

It is no problem to use offline but you still get nagged to go online when you start FSX. Also it must connect at some point because tyu get adverts on the start screen.

No the Steam program itself still has to run, but you can set it to run offline, and it won't phone home. That said, it really is not intrusive and doesn't cause any issues.  One benefit of it there is it incorporates Steam's in game interface. So you can access the internet while in game which you can use to bring up sites with charts etc..

FSX:SE running and no Steam app...

It won't show up in the APPs list unless you have the interface open, If you scroll down the process list to the S's you'll see Steam.EXE, and Steamwebhelper.exe running. If you look in your active task bar, you'll see the icon active, and if you try to close it, FSX will close also.

Thanks

YMMV, mine does.

I see no Steam icon on the Taskbar, therefore I can't close it.

If I go into the Task Manager and close down the services you noted (which are not .exes or apps) FSX keeps purring right along.

Not that it matters, those services aren't doing anything anyway, except consuming a little RAM that has zero affect on FSX.

Just a heads up the Steam March Madness sale is on now, for those who want to try out FSX Steam, it's now 70% off at $7.49, addons are 50% off.

Mad, yeah I'm mad, that X-Plane is still $59.99!

The thread topic is a bit misleading as Steam isn't having a store wide sale.  Dovetail products and the addons for them are on sale.

The Dovetail Games ‪March Madness‬ Steam sale is now on! For a limited time only make huge savings on FSX: Steam Edition and a selection of add-ons.
